Ingredient Search - "Bottlers"

Hi,
I've been seeing an ingredient called "bottlers" in a handful of Jamaican recipes. I've tried a Google search but cannot find out what the heck they are :-P

Can someone please help me figure out what they are??

I am not familiar with bottlers but if u can share a recipe with the word in it, we may be able to figure what it is referencing?

Musa must be reading some old book, as the term "bottlers" will be very unfamiliar with many folks. By "bottlers" it is usually referred to the amount of extract to use in a likely alcoholic beverage recipes. For example a proportion of three ounces to a gallon for a drink mix. To my knowledge it is a term more used for brewing or mixing of alcoholic beverage.

Musa, as Kia said if you need help with a recipe, we'll be able to help you out. The "bottlers" extract is a very old and many people will be "ugh" with that term. So are you mixing rum or what?

HaHa!! No rum-mixing here!
I'll need to scour the net again for those recipes. However, while searching, I just now saw the term pop up on a wikipedia article for Fish Tea. It seems to fall within the root/starchy vegetables. I also came across a horticultural site that mentions:

<span style="font-style: italic">&quot;plantains/bottlers/bananas&quot;</span>.

And then there's a reference (non-Jamaican but Caribbean nontheless) by a woman from the Caymen Islands reminiscing:

<span style="font-style: italic">&quot;...Along with the beef, there also would be a big pot of boiled provisions from our garden. We always hoped there would be yams and if not, we always had cassava, sweet potatoes and green bottlers, cooked in a separate pot, not with the meat...&quot;</span>

So far, I've narrowed the term to either refer to plantains (colloquially) or to bottle gourds (known mostly as &quot;fuzzy melon&quot; within the Asian community here in SoCal).

at some point today i'll delve deeply into it.

i've never heard of it in jamaican cooking. the asian melons are called wintermelons - that's all i know.

as you noted its a Cayman island term for a small green banana. in the eastern caribbean they refer tot hem as green figs..in jamaica its just plain green banana
