Who's got a coffee roaster?

That's how my grandmother dried coffee
During the 'Summer Holidays' we would pick the beans on our grandparents' small hillside farm. Grandma would dry them on sheet of zinc. Can't remember how they got peeled? Maybe when they were dried?
Then she would 'parch' the coffee beans in a dutch pot (cast iron?) on the wood fire. That smell was hmm hmm wonderful. The next day we would help Grandma grind the coffee with a hand grinder then she would boil water and 'draw' the ground coffee through a calico bag.
Our morning snack was always fresh brewed coffee sweetened with condensed milk accompanied by hard dough bread, butter, and slices of avocado

Wow! My grandparents (mother's side) were coffee farmers in the upper hills of St. Andrew and this was exactly how they roasted their coffee. They produced some of the best coffee up the area (Mt James - above Golden Springs). Only the big people drank coffee... they relegated us to hot chocolate which they also produced and pounded.

my grananty who grew me in st. elizabeth wasnt big on the coffee thing
other people grew and processed coffee. we were more into cassava.
i do have vague memories of the smell and taste of fresh sweetened coffee, but it would not have been something we had often. i actually grew up on limeleaf tea for breakfast.Comment

Cassava I remember waking up at 5AM with my aunt to ground cassava but I did like the resulting bammy!!
