simple/poor ppl food

that you havent hat in a while....

u know how certain foods back in the day got classified (sometimes jokingly sometimes not) as poor ppl food. what a mek ur mouth run water lately....


for me its mackerel curry run dung. and if it was ben jawhsin week den it was soso run dung wid not fish. lol. wen i was little use to visit my grand uncle an aunt and dem did still a cook pan wood/cole. wen u see she put dirt pan di pot and put it pan di fiyah and start cook omg it smell so good. wid some roas breadfruit and likkle sugar water wid sour orange. heavenly.

i've had my share of poor people food in the past...

mackerel and boiled banana

boiled dumplin and butter... this was a disgusting meal

pack of cock soup and tough crackers...

i lived on those meals for many months as i paved my way in life during my 20s. must be why i was such a feather weight who didn't budge over 100lbs on the scale. today i weigh 125lbs and some times i feel like a heavy weight. lol

dumplin and butter nice man a wah u chat say. we use to eat dat for fun. run boat durin the summer months.

ETA: seem like butter use to taste better back then cus i dont thinki could eat it so now.

Wasn't it margarine? I recall being sent to the Chiney shop fi a buy a 'stick a butter'... but I remember thinking that it said margarine... anybady remember the brand name?

fiwi poor ppl meals depended heavily on what was in season.

cassava dumpling
ackee wid fried up bits of pork skin (i think dem call it crackling)
green banana porridge
cornmeal dumpling, everlasting
white rice, everlasting

At the end of the month when money running low we had:

Susumber run dung cooked with mackerel and coconut milk; or ackee and calaloo with boiled corn dumpling (made from scratch); peas soup with left over pieces of smoked meat my Grandmother used to have in the hangkra (this was a basket type thing hung over the fire to cure meat that was salted) and roast fish caught in the river. Bammie and fry fish was a stable (because we were not far from the sea and fishermen used to practically give away their fish at about 5 PM).

Cornmeal porridge but every once in a while as an adult mi crave it.... IF, that's IF mommie fix it.
Bully beef and cabbage, bully beef wid white rice, bully beef wid hard dough bread, bully beef wid boil dumplin, bully beef wid plantain. Bully beef now....

yes it is margarine but u know we call all a dem butta.
dem still sell the box with two sticks. u can go shop go buy one stick....back in the days u coulda did buy half stick i tink is gold bond is the brand but mi no sure....

chiffon only come in the dish.

mi granny use to tell we bout kreng kreng...wat u called hangkra. dem cure the meat in it. she talked alot about storing food in the butchry...

seem like back den dem use to eat pork more dan beef cus mi always a hear bout wen dem kill hog etc etc...and she always drool about pork skin. lol

when u boil the ground food down in coconut milk. generally no meat. janga and crawfish at the most
