I am sure the white men called it negro yam because it was eaten by people with African origin. Actually all those tubers did not originate from Africa. They were brought to Africa through trade from southern America.

None of the tubers originated from Africa.

Yanki call sweet potato yams....Potato's are native to the Americas....yams or specificly Dioscorea genus is not native to Jamaica...

Contrary to what I said earlier, yam originated effectively from West Africa; it is cassava rather which is from southern America.

Yams were in the south seas Tonga for instance has a tradtions of Yams I am not sure if their yam is of the Dioscorea Genus... (the reason y i keep going on about the Genus is because there are root vegtables in asia called yams which are not of this African Yam family..).. I know the Yoruba gods have a close association with Yam..

this is the reason y i do not believe that there was any regular trade between Africa and the Americas.....Yam (the Dioscorea genus) was not found in the Americas nor Cassava, Maize, potatoes found in Africa..Maize is interesting because the Indians of brazil would make sacrifices of maize to the sea so it should have traveled across to Africa on the currents .....

I found out something that confirms what great grand daddy and other old time Jamaicans knew... . and was .. apparently there are more carriers of the sickle cell trait in Africa than in America yet there are higher incidence of sickle cell Among black yankis... this is apparently this is due to the diet of yam in Africa..

Also something worth mentioning is that the yam head taste bitter a posions extract can be pulled from it depending on the type.. the sane bitter taste is found in immature yam....Vicent yam was what baby food was supposed to be made from...because of the low level of toxins....
