Canada's age of sexual consent will be bumped up two years to 16 beginning Thursday.(yesterday)

The change means adults who have sex with boys or girls aged 14 and 15 years old could face criminal charges.

Canada's age of consent has been 14 since 1892.

Is 16 still too young ?

I dont know about other countries but where I live the legal age is 16,...my youngest daughter is 14,....any man touch her before the legal age and I will personally rip his throat out with my bare hands,..touch her anytime before she reaches 18 and he is likely to feel the full force of a 4 by four around the back of his head.

I suppose when I was much younger I would have said "any age once shi start har period".....lol

But now that I am a father I think a realistic age for having sex is 18.

Big man trust mi,there`s a big difference in maturity between a 16 and a 18 yr old,...besides,its not so much the maturity as well as man an man taking advantage of yu young pickney,..yu wouldnt want dat fe yu own would you,yu wouldnt want no dutty man come use har an den move on to de nex gyal pickney,...it bad enough when shi 18 but at least she`s a bit more mature to hangle things.

Newtral. mi understand wah you a say. and even if my dawta is 49 mi wouldnt want no man wuk har because mi a man and mi kow whats its like. Wah mi a say is there is really not much of a difference between a 16 and a 18 YO. to be from 15-20 are all in the same basket. They are all stupid. And also to me a 15 yo in jamaica is more mature than a 15 yo in america.

I agree,but I think de main reason is de Jamaican 15 yr old is more sexually aware because man start check har an ask fe piece much earlier than the american 15yr old start get check by man.

Mi si big man a yard a call to young young girls couldnt be more than 13 or 14,......it look pretty bad from my angle cos mi no used to see things like dat,...but I understand that different things fe different cultures,in some muslim countries dem a marry dem off fram dem reach 8 yrs old.

see I look at life from a different angle than most.... If you sleep for 5 days...without asking someone or look at whatever is posted around you..you wouldnt know what day or time it is. Most of us at 13 can produce sperm and most females can have baby...which means that person is an adult. And if you check history..most kings and queens were in their teens. most people died in their 30/40s. I feel if the government put the age of consent at 25 the behavior of a 16 YO now will be the behavior of a 22 yo. I look at life as a dollyhouse. The lawmakers and biggaheads tell you how they want their little dollyhouse session to be.

a 16 YO is a 16 YO is a 16 YO... no matter whether they are married, having sex, or still a virgin...

Mentally, they are at the same level... still subject to those spurts of hormones that make them ecstatically happy one minute and suicidal the next... these are not people who should be making ANY life changing decisions.

and Kingy - beleive me - there is HUGE difference in maturity between a 16 and an 18 YO girl - perhaps u could only understand if you were a woman yourself. I think it has something to do with the passign of puberty and your body kinda settling into its own... no more crazy grwoth spurts and things sprouting etc. etc.

I am no doctor or scientist - but I can only give you my perspective as a woman... I would personally love if my daughter waited until at least 20 to have sex... that may not be realistic in todays society - I would compromise at 18... but anything before that is just not acceptable to me casue I know she would nto be ready mentally.

I am of the same viewpoint,I`ve been joking with my daughter since a very early age that no boyfriend until she`s 25,....Now that she`s 14 I notice that the "joke" doesnt seem to be all that funny to her anymore...lol

As you quite rightly say there are so many things going on around her to influence her decision that it may not be realistic to expect her to wait until she`s married,or in a long term relationship,I still have in me the values of the old days but I dont think this is enough in the kind of society we live,I just hope she exercise common sense.
