My Thai Wife Scams - rather His Thai Wife, follows a Welshman who comes to Thailand, meets a bar girl, then quickly falls in love and marries her. It doesn't take long before they realize the person they met isn't exactly the person they wanted.

As an expat living in Thailand since 1996, Scott Mallon has worked as a photojournalist, been inside both Bang Kwang and Klong Prem Prisons, lost months at a time partying the days and nights away, been hospitalized several times, been near death once, fought in Muay Thai, managed a world-rated championship boxer, trained professional boxers, been thrown in jail, and fathered two children. Somehow, through it all, he's managed to remain married to the same Thai woman.

So, what is the problem? The cross-cultural challenges are no different than those faced by any two people from different cultures. Admittedly, one could argue that there is the potential for (s)exploitation; but one could easily argue the same thing happens in Western cultures.

The men in the video sure doesn't look like "beat up ole goats" and I hardly think all the women involved are "young prostitutes." However, even if I allow you both arguments, aren't the females entitled to a life away from prostitution which they are probably engaged in for survival? As one woman said, her husband takes good care of her and from the video, they have a fish farm that they work together to build a good life for themselves and help their community. No doubt some relationships are the opposite but again, the (s)exploitation is not unique to Thailand.

In a number of ways, it is far too easy to sit on this side of the world where we have numerous choices and pass moral judgement on people whose shoes we have never walked in. But for God's grace and the good fortune of not being born in Thailand...

Yes all the women profiled were young prostitutes. Come on the guys looked like recycled merchandise.

As I said, I have sympathy for the women. The women they profiled were earning subsistence wages until they went into prostitution. The disgrace is with the society for not providing viable options....and the King is filthy rich. Shame on him.

The men do have more optoins. They could day in the UK or North America and marry a woman closer to their own age but t hey want to fulfill the fantasy of being with a nubile young woman who acts like she is into him.

You didn't see the documentary. The relationships did not work. The woman with the farm basically took the man's money. Milked him for everything he was worth.

it serves the man right.... the constant refrain....

the cruelty and self righeteosness of the bitter....

the women suffer in that film....and that is painful....i am sure men have been rippped off...Women should not be exploited....nor should the misfortune of others be presented a their fault....

... But i am aware of a lot of expats who are married to Thai brides..and live there .. i have worked with a lot of them... one in fact just reccommedned me for a contract i Africa.... Ex military, mercs, oil workers who rotate into these countries is SE asia, Saudi, Australia mainly to avoid tax.... alot are second marriages as western women cant deal with the seperation anxiety....

the marriages seem to work... a number of them live in Thailand and have been married for decades.. they have children and run biznesses together...By Thia law expats are not allowed to own property and the wives have held the property for years... A sparing partner friend of mine is a Muay Thai boxer as well as a consultant, he even became a monk for a year... is married....

one guy i know is married to the daughter of a general, others to bar girls... one thing that is common they tell me is that their wives take over the finance and strech the money... i had one auzzie tell me an amusing story about him colapsing from heat storke hurting himself . His wife calls her mother to come help and his mother in law finding him on the ground in his house.. the mother in law started to beat her daughter for not looking after him....

I never ask how they met their wives but if they are happy more power to them...


I have mentioned i a m ugl, scarified face, broken nose, pock marks, yet i have been proposed to by ladies in Nigeria, Kazahstan, Azerbijan, Uzbeckistan, Malayiasia, Libya, Tunisia, Tchad, Sudan, Mauretania, Jamaica, Gabon, Morroco, Russia in 1990, Lebannon, Libya, Dom Rep, Burma, Srilanka, Liberia, and a few other places i have forgotten... Not just for my hesitating good looks, but because i have a passport or two that would lead them out the country....Desperate people make desperate choices... This never happens in Barbados, Norway France, uk denmark or USA....

But the thing is while i frequent bars and dives for bizness... it is not bar girls that find me attractive, in fact they dont propose to me... * I usually pay one two to sit besided close to prevent the hassle .......... it is translators, guides,engineers, pharmasists, logistic people, doctors lawyers.... middle aged females who i work with... single.....succesful and desperate...

one of the guys who is married to a Thai bride, i did some work for in Nigeria, he had me do some stuff for a large nigerian conglomerate and there was a young female engineer that made Ms Wek look ugly constantly nagging him for my telephone number .. he pointed out that i was married and dont play around her comment was she was willing to share.....
