I'm not saying that this issue is exclusive to black people but this is where the situation seems to come up the most.
There is an expression that we use often to refer to ourselves or rather, others who suffer from this affliction. "Crabs in a barrel." It's basically saying that if we see someone "rising" above us, "we" as a people want to drag them back down or prevent them from "rising".
I've been in situations where I've been looking for a job or other opportunities and thought "Hey, i know that So-n-So would be perfect for this opportunity." So I will let that person know and let them take it from there. Even if it means we are vying for the same thing, if I know that someone is looking for the available opportunity, I will let them know.
I've been told many times that this type of behavior is atypical for black people, esp black women. Do you think this is true? I was raised to believe that we will never get anywhere unless we help one another. So why are we so hesitant to do it? Why do we keep some information to ourselves when we know it would benefit someone else? Has anyone else encountered this?
