No Genitals

My daughter's friend just moved here from Zambia and have lived in Zurich for the last two years on a work assignment.

She had us in stitches when we went to visit her this weekend and swapped stories about our upbringing and the experiences that have prepared us, good and bad, for adulthood.

I laughed so hard, I thought I would never recover, when she told us about her first encounter with the Swiss after spending all her childhood knowing very little about white people, apart from what she learned in her small village school and what she saw on TV news as she got older.

She was approached again and again by Swiss men who treated her well, the only problem was, she would become very nervous in their presence, to the point of shaking uncontrollably.

Anyway, long story short, she started to think seriously about this problem and finally, was able to pin it on her childhood dolls. Apparently, the white dolls she had throughout her childhood and all other dolls she'd ever seen were white with NO GENITALS.

Because of that, she concluded, she found it difficult to imagine men who looked like her dolls did, to actually have genitals. I laugh, but in a way was saddened by it.

She has since gone to therapy and should be ok.

Can you imagine that? How many others, I wondered, are still so strongly impacted and scarred by the "ISM's" created by man?

Whats ISM? So black male dolls had genitalia? Did she think the female dolls were anatomically correct too?

ISM's pronounced e-zims that changes the meaning of words such as in racISM.

She apparently did not have black dolls but since she is black and have been exposed to black people, she never questioned that.

Funny though, I was laughing about it at work and my Chinese co-worker said she had a similar experience. She said that most girls in China are fascinated by real blonds with blue eyes. She said they deliberately go up and touch people with very fair skin and hair, and babies with the look are very big targets, as they can be grabbed from the arms of the carerer just to touch and hold them.

She also said that they have even gone as far as to follow fair-skinned women to the ladies rooms just to see if their body parts are the same.
