Female monkeys may shout during sex to help their male partners climax, research now reveals.

Without these yells, male Barbary macaques (Macaca sylvanus) almost never ejaculated, scientists found.

Female monkeys often utter loud, distinctive calls before, during or after sex. Their exact function, if any, has remained heavily debated.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Counting pelvic thrusts</span>

To investigate the purpose behind these calls, scientists at the German Primate Center in Göttingen focused on Barbary macaques for two years in a nature reserve in Gibraltar.

The researchers found that females yelled during 86 percent of all sexual encounters. When females shouted, males ejaculated 59 percent of the time.

However, when females did not holler, males ejaculated less than 2 percent of the time.

To see if yelling resulted from how vigorous the sex was, the scientists counted the number of pelvic thrusts males gave and timed when they happened.

They found when shouting occurred, thrusting increased. In other words, hollering led to more vigorous sex.

Counting monkey pelvic thrusts is admittedly &quot;quite weird, but it's science,&quot; researcher Dana Pfefferle, a behavioral scientist and primatologist at the German Primate Center, told LiveScience. &quot;You get used to it.&quot;

<span style="font-weight: bold">Quite promiscuous</span>

Male and female Barbary macaques are promiscuous, often having sex with many partners. This means sperm levels can get quite drained.

The females shout when they are most fertile, so males can make the most use of their sperm.

Pfefferle noted her research suggests these calls might also make females more attractive to other males. She added these shouts might play different roles in other species.

Pfefferle and her colleagues detailed their findings online Dec. 18 in the journal Proceedings of the Royal Society B.

Lol,..talking about loud sex,...years ago when I was at university a couple friends and I rented an apartment and shared the rent,..trust me, that apt. was the epitome of soddom and gomorrah,..girls girls girls and non stop girls coming through at all times,we used to have a big laugh at who could have the girls make the most noise in our bedrooms.

I had this one girl who was what we called a *screamer*....man oh man,could that girl scream,...and that was even before I had the baggy down,.........even the neighbours could hear when this girl had ...erm,...*arrived*.........I used to come out the room looking at my friends with that kind of &quot;i am the boss&quot; expression on my face...lol.

I can definitely see *you* in that situation

Interestingly, years ago a friend of mine told me that she faked making noises because she thought, from watching a couple of x-rated movies, that it was what women were supposed to do, this despite the fact that during her years with this guy, she found sex &quot;painful&quot; and never experienced an orgasm with him. I think there is something to that kind of thinking; i.e. some men simply expect their women to be loud as an indicator of how much of 'stud' they the guys are, and how good a 'job' they're doing at the time.

CEW, you've got a point there.

My roommate in college admitted to making lots of noise in the hope that boyfriend would hurry and get it over with, and I think that is a very common behavior (whether women are in denial about that is another issue).

The noise significantly increases when faking an orgasm, by the way. Yes, those are the times he truly feels like the STUD.
