Moral of the story: The Lessons from Micelle Obama

If you have been paying attention to the Michele and Barack story it reminds me of some women I know in my life that could learn a lot from Michelle. You know those women who love “<span style="font-weight: bold">materially”</span> and “<span style="font-weight: bold">conditionally</span>”.

1. Michelle was approached by a young man with a funny First Name and a strange last name. She once said “who names their child Barack”. She took on his name anyway

2. Michelle dated Barack when he lived in a one bedroom apartment with no glitz nor glamour but she shared his cramped up space anyway

3. She met him with the 10 inch high nappy Afro and not looking so GQ but she Saw a beautiful man inside

4. He drove a car according to her that has a hole in the passenger side – she could see the sidewalk go by when driving. But she went along for the ride anyway

5. She stood by him a Harvard graduate who decided to help the poor and make little to NO money instead of making 6 figures on Wall Street.[/list]
Now with that said .. Look where she is now and how much they both have accomplished together. How many women you know would be understanding and patient enough to stand by Barack back then? Suppose you didn’t know how the story would end – would you have stuck with Barack back then?

Yes but werent they both in Law School together? They must have both known or felt that they were on to something more than what they were at the time! Maybe not the White House, but some kind of house and at least a middle class life...

Sure she may have had others to choose from (wonder how may AfAmericans were in the program?), but she must have known that he was or would be worth more than he appeared

I know someone who swore she'd never date a man who has a 'menial job'. SHe is now dating a waiter- why because in his country, he was a chemical engineer. He has been in America for 1 year now, but she sees 'potential', in that since he's educated, and has great ambition, she feels they'll make a good team....

Deark.. Regarding the first part of your post - yes to all of that but the point is take Michelle out the story and put yourself or someone you know.. would they stand the test? I actaully put myself in that position and I can honestly say I would have had the patience up to the part when im decide sey im ago forfeit a lucrative job after graduation. I would not have left him but I would have been questioning his judgement/reasoning all the way. That is my honest assessmemt of myself.

Now that story of the woman you know is why I posed this question..so many women tend to out emphasis on what a man has to offer <span style="font-weight: bold">now </span>.. precluding the &quot;potential&quot;

I dont know their story, but seeing them together makes me think they are the epitome of 'evenly yoked'!

She was willing to trust his choice of a job post-graduation. You're right, some wives might not have been happy with that decision! But seems he always had a plan? So they must have struggled financially for some years before he starting making a 'decent living'?

she met him when she was already a lawyer and he was a summer intern from her alma mater.. the potential was already there

oh when I was younger and could see the potential sure.. to do it at this stage of my life.. I am a bit beyond dat.

In Ja. &quot;back in the days&quot; that's how many relationships were built. I want to call them <span style="font-style: italic">the rites of passage</span>.

For example, you may or may not remember how parents and grandparents never used credit to purchase beds and other furniture. They came together, worked together, saved together and bought their pieces, one by one while building a relationship.

Nowadays, generally speaking, the cry is, &quot;Show me the money!&quot;

This is not to say that back then people were perfect but they were more prepared and able to go through thick or thin in their relationship.

Mi know some woman woulda frown upon Barack in a heart beat

I can't count how many times women turned up their noses at me when I was younger and in college just because I drove a 12-year-old Buick. Now, as a Walmart greeter driving a Toyota Echo, they are mourning what could have been if they had stuck with me.

they would frown upon Barack because they would not be in love with him. i think we perhaps underestimate the power of love to bind people together through adversity. love is not something you decide to apply because you think the person can bring in money. love is what you feel despite that.

michelle, or any woman in a similar situation as hers, would have had a pick of nuff more suitable husbands, i'd think. men who were already successful, had less to strive for and prove than Barack. if position and success were all that mattered to her, she wouldn't have given Barack the time of day. but she decided to pick him and work with him because of love.

I agree with you Wendy. Nuff of my friends back in University were like that. If my brother man wasnt stepping out of his degree program and into some high paying first job, they had no time for him. Not all were like this but surely enough of them had no trouble stating that they were.

My best friend at the time was dating this really sweet guy during school. Although he was in university, he was a bit unfocused - meaning he wasnt sure what he really wanted to do with his education and career. She would complain to me about him having no ambition, etc. And I would point out to her that he must have some ambition and drive if he is willing to attend university

I said how bout you help and encourage him figure out what he wants to do careerwise because I thought he was a wonderful and kind man that she shouldnt let go of.

Well, she eventually cut him loose saying that if she married him, he wouldnt be able to provide for her like she wanted.

Funny thing is, as soon as she did that, that man came alive.

He moved to Vancouver; went back to school for film production; and is now a film producer with a good career in front of him, and is married to the nicest woman in the world.

Today, I am still good friends with him and told him the woman he ended up with is so much better than my so-called friend would ever be.

His wife, who was in law school at the time he met her, encouraged him and nutured his dreams. And now she is reaping the benefits of staying by his side when things were lean. He drove a 15 yr old Volvo and lived in a crappy apartment. Now, she is a stay at home mom with 2 beautiful kids and has a man that will move mountains to take care of his family.

My friend kicked a good man with tons of potential to the curb because she couldnt see pass some initial confusion on his part.

Him and I remained friends even after my best friend broke up with him because I geniunely liked and had respect for him. And now, my (ex) girlfriend is single and bitter that she has no one meaningful in her life. Serves her [censored] right.
