A friend of mine recently lost her cat, well almost. The cat 'escaped' and was lost in the wooded areas around her home for almost 3 days! She was beside herself. She could not stop crying and walking the streets with flyers, knocking on neighbors' doors asking for their help etc.
I felt so bad for her, but I felt even more for her boyfriend. He had no idea how to console her, none. He helped with the flyers and canvassing neighborhood, but the dread I saw in his eyes when it was time to go home, was almost comical.
Sure he liked the cat, but he could never come close to the near devotion she has for her 4 legged friend. On a phone call with her one of the evenings, she recounted again how he'd gotten out, and how she was always so careful, and she replayed the incident over and over. She also shared many memories of how much they'd been through together and how she felt 'unwhole' without him (the cat). So I only got a 30 minute conversation.
After they found the dear animal, she was ecstatic and would recount his homecoming for anyone who would listen. SHe said she hadnt slept while the cat was away. I just wondered how her boyfriend managed in that time, and also I wonder how people who are not natural pet owners/lovers do when they get involved with a mate who loves another (pet).
