Neurotic Individuals who have a Need to Confess to Crimes They Didn't Commit

I know I shouldn't laugh but everytime they have a TV show with this kind of storyline. It's hard not to There is a storyline like that on The Closer tonight and Columbo re-runs have storylines like that.

So what's up with that? Does this really happen or is this just for TV drama?

I am not referring to people who confess after being badgered by police (that's a whole other issues) but to individuals who feel the need to purge themselves by confessing.
