I've never heard of it before until today. I thought the person made a mistake.

I know a lovely couple from England who did something similar. They combined both their names but his was last. Using the example above, both he and his wife change theirs to Smith-Doe. Never heard of it the other way around.

Re: This Name Thing
Family surnames are considered to be a very powerful lineage in Korea. Women do not change their ancestral surnames after marriage.
In Spanish-speaking countries, people typically have one or more forenames and two surnames, the first inherited from the father and the second from the mother. the example of Pedro Pérez Montilla, his wife, whose maiden name was Leocadia Blanco Alvarez, and their son Antonio. The father may be called Don Pedro or Señor Don Pedro Pérez Montilla; his wife Doña Leocadia, or Señora Blanco, or Señora Blanco de Alvarez, or Señora Blanco Alvarez de Pérez Montilla. Their son could be Antonio Pérez Blanco, or Antonio Pérez-Blanco, or less commonly Antonio Pérez y Blanco. If he wants to sound aristocratic he may adopt the name Señor Don Antonio Pérez Montilla y Blanco Alvarez.countries.http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Spanish_naming_customs

I think that Don Cherry's son-in-law took the Cherry name.
