Locking the door

This came up in the Oscar Pistorius discussions. Some people felt for sure she felt she felt she was in danger as she locked the door.

I don't know if is force of habit or what but I always tend to lock the door even when I am home alone. I have tried hard to break the habit after this bad incident. A couple of years ago, I had a bath and locked the door. Luckily my son was home from school as when I tried to leave, I could not unlock the door. My son had to call emergency services. It was so embarrassing that when the police and fire department arrived (yes they sent everyone) my son went to his room until they left. Fortunately, one guy knew about locks and the other new about carpentry. They did not have to break down the door.

So, do you always lock the door?

The lock to your bathroom door was stuck? So you didnt have a towel or robe to cover with (or the clothes you had on before bath), so this is why it was embarrassing, or was it the very fact of being locked in the bathroom that was shaming?

I had my clothes and I got dressed before I even tried to exit. It was the fact that I locked myself in the bathroom and couldn't get out that was embarrassing.

OK I see...To answer your question, I do not close the door for a shower, but we also dont have young children.

I never lock the door. My house back in the UK where I lived with my children has no locks on any of the bathroom or toilet doors. We knew if the door was closed, someone was in there. If ajar, empty. Now I live alone, I never even bother to close the door.

Well I have gradually been breaking myself of the habit. How embarrassing to get locked in if I was alone. I have no idea how I would even call for help since there is no window in my bathroom.

I never lock the door unless we have guest over. I normally just close it and in our house a closed bathroom door means someone is probably in there. What happen i the door is locked and you slip in the shower and hit your head etc... ? Better to just close the door!

I find that in the Oscar Pistorius case, not only did she lock the door but she had her cell phone in their with her. Maybe she was yelling at him to calm down or she would phone the police, but she never had the chance. Anyway, that is another subject.

No you are not off topic My Looh. It is the comments about the girlfriend that inspired me to post this. People found it strange that she locked the door. When I was married, I don't recall if I locked the door. I guess so. Always did growing up. I typically used to lock the door out of habit. So I did not find it strange

The cell phone...well I can't explain that at 3 AM. I do try to remember to bring a portable in with me if I am expecting an important call. I am out of this locking habit...well most of the time.

Anyway, if bathroom doors weren't meant to be locked, why do they have locks?
