what is mountain/eastern/western time? how did they establish these times?

I think it developed from the need to help <span style="color: #FF0000">English </span> sailors figure out where they were east to west on the planet. (longitude lines, and clocks, plus the sun position )
But first, someone had to develop an accurate portable clock.

.....or, say you live in the mountains of the USofA....it's noon when the sun is directly overhead. But say one lives on the East Coast...the sun will have already passed overhead on it's way to California...so it's like, later in the day if one is sitting <span style="font-style: italic">there</span>. So the Easterners figure out that it's more like 2am, say, and they make their own time zone for it, so they don't get confused with anybody else.
