I think they lie because they have a strong need for acceptance and they feel the truth may make them less desirable?If you don't fight for what you deserve, you deserve what you get.

I don't think "they" know what the truth is. Isn't a pathological liar sumbady that believes their own "lies"....which seems to me, more like a warp in perception. Personally, as an "<span style="font-style: italic">expert</span>", I like to call it "Alzeimers" cuz I don't like to be called a liar, <span style="font-style: italic">per se</span>
(there's a difference between "honesty" and the "truth"....."honesty" is subjective) ...and I'm not sure it's tied to low self esteem.

but they will front and try to convince you and everyone around you that it is <span style="font-weight: bold">you </span>with the problem cause they cant see themselves for who <span style="font-weight: bold">they</span> truly are.

It is an illness, <span style="font-weight: bold">A MENTAL ONE AT THAT</span>...hence the word <span style="font-weight: bold">"pathological"</span>...they just cannot help themselves...sick.Comment

I think one problem is: .... some people define themselves by their thoughts and intentions, while the rest of the world is judging them by their <span style="font-style: italic">actions</span> (or inaction).....and the two often don't "line up". If ya have a problem with a pathological liar, just lower your expectations.Comment

I work with one. Man, he's sometimes very hard to take, but I find myself pitying him more than anything else...
Behind his back there's talk about him... female coworkers hate his guts, I try to 'explain' him... but I'm always scrambling...
He's no friend of mine, but I can sometimes see his neurosis and it makes me sad for him...
When his lies become so entangling and he's in danger of henging imself, I just smile and nod... I can't see the point in pointing out that he's contradicting himself, or showing himself up... he would just end up trying to point out where *I* was wrong and how *I* had misunderstood him (like everyone else) and so on and so forth...
