The country's immigration authorities have zoomed in on a growing practice in which Jamaican citizens are getting married to Haitian criminals.
National Security Minister, Senator Dwight Nelson says the nation's coastal borders are being used as windows of opportunity for Haitian criminals.
Speaking in the Senate on Friday morning, the Security Minister said the notorious guns for drugs trade has played a central role in which marriages are organised as a cloak for criminal activities.
Senator Nelson says the country's immigration agency has stepped up its vigilance against these marriages of convenience.
"In this regard the Ministry of National Security will continue to exercise its functions to protect the Jamaican people. I want to make a direct appeal to citizens not to facilitate illegal activities, particularly marriage of convenience with foreign criminals," Senator Nelson said.
"The governments own Passport, Immigration and Citizenship Agency will be more vigilant in ensuring that these marriages of conveniences and other forms of deception are not used as a cover for furthering criminal activities," he said.
He adds that the Ministry has been engaged in discussions with Haiti, the Dominican Republic and Costa Rica and other partners to address the security threat posed by the guns for drugs trade.
