What would you do ?

You met her about 2 months ago. You’ve dated regularly since then and have also had lots of good convo via phone, text and e-mail. You have a lot in common and the vibes are good. It seems to have potential to be serious. No bedroom business yet.

The last time you spoke she said she had two things to ask you. The first was something trivial. This may have been by design but I’m not sure. The second was “can you loan me $1200”.

She is a financial advisor and works for a large well known financial services firm.

Rollin, personally I would take the direct approach. If I were in your shoes, I would say, &quot;Of course I'll lend you the money. But I have to admit that question took me by surprise and it even made me uncomfortable. Is there something about your financial situation that you want to tell me?&quot;

I have a policy about lending money to girlfriends. Ask yourself this question before you give it to them. &quot;If they don't pay me back will I feel [censored] off at them or will it not bother them because I love them to the extent that a default on this loan will not affect my feelings towards her?

If you are going to feel bothered by her not repaying you and you feel it will be stressful to your relationship then do NOT lend it to her.

$1,200 is relative. That is a lot of money to some and really not that much to others. I'm not sure what your situation is and what you are comfortable with lending. For me it would be a case of being madly in love with someone and a fairly good certainty of sharing a future with them before I would give out that much money.

Well here's the thing CM. Loans always alter the dynamic of every relationship, and rarely in a good way. Take sex for instance. If you go to bed with a woman who owes you money are you now to consider yourself paid ? I know for example of some instances where this was the unstated and implied situation. As in, how do you mean to be asking me for your money if you have been getting food in the bed ? You see what I mean ? Everything can just get very awkward.

My feeling is this, if you have to ask someone who is for all intents and purposes, still a stranger, for money, it might mean one of two things: your family and long time friends are all tapped out and tired of you and/or banks and credit unions do not consider you a good risk. In either case, why should I get involved in this ?
