Nightclub killer receives life sentence

A long-time fugitive who peppered a nightclub dance floor with bullets, randomly killing two people and injuring four others, has been sentenced to life in prison with no hope of parole for 15 years.
Dudley Forbes showed no regard for people’s lives in the early morning on Sept. 17, 1994 as he angrily fired at least 14 bullets inside and outside Whip Burger, an after-hours nightclub, Justice Brian Trafford said yesterday in sentencing Forbes.

“People who went there for an enjoyable night with friends were panic-stricken, screaming in fear, running for safety,” the judge said.

Donovan Samuda, 29, and Howard Deacon, 37, were killed.

Forbes’ senseless crime grew out of his history of emotionally and physically abusing Lorna Graham, his ex-girlfriend and mother of his boy, who was the real target of his venom that night, the judge said.

Trafford also sentenced Forbes to a further concurrent 10 years for aggravated assault in a horrific 1993 knife attack on Graham in the hallway of her apartment building, where he stabbed her 13 times.

Forbes, 44, had first pleaded not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder and four of attempted murder. His trial began Nov. 6. But after the Crown presented its case, he made a surprising guilty plea the next day to two counts of second-degree murder and one of aggravated assault.

After the shooting, Forbes, also known as Dewey or Do Do, remained on the loose for 10 years, topping Toronto’s most wanted list. He was profiled on America’s Most Wanted 12 times before he was finally tracked down in Kingston, Jamaica, in 2004.

Outside court yesterday Graham, 38, who has moved from Toronto to an undisclosed location with her two sons, now 16 and 18, to be safe from Forbes, said she is happy to be alive.

“I do hope that this sends some kind of message to all the abused women who are out there: There is hope even after many years.”

Coming to testify and face the man she fears was difficult, she said.

“If it wasn’t for my two sons I don’t think I could have done it.”

Prosecutor Lori Hamilton praised witnesses for coming to testify even after 12 years had passed. It was a tough trial, partly owing the time gap, she said.

Toronto police Staff Sgt. Rolf Prisor, who worked on the case over many years as a homicide detective, said the Whip Burger bloodbath was one of the first of a series of senseless club shootings in the mid-1990s, and was probably one of the most horrific.

<font color="blue">Nope, that's not what it means at all. It means that he has control issues and is dangerous.

There are a number of reasons that women feel that being hit by their man is acceptable or a sign of love. Many of those reasons are known only to them. Some of it has to do with equating love with violence because that is what they have known and experienced. Some of it has to do with equating any attention at all, even violent or controlling, with affection because they've had so little of it.

This is not across the board in violent relationships, though, and it shouldn't be assumed that every woman that is in a violent relationship feels this way. </font>

you're right and a real woman should know how to bob and weave and jab with her left hand, and cover the kitchen floor. if she skips and works with weights for one hour each day she will be better able to appreciate a true man's love [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70409-waytogo.gif[/img]
