According to a preacher I heard on the radio, as long as you are in a relationship, you are one of those listed: inmate, room-mate or soulmate.

Inmate: you feel imprisoned.

Room-mate: you share a space; that's all.

Soul-mate: your lover, friend, mate...your everything.

You can take it a symbolic language and argue that there comes a point in one's life that one realizes that there is truly a Creator...and acknowledge him on the road to Damascus, that place of realization.

Alernatively, you could just accept the story as Paul's personal interpretation of his encounter with his Creator.

As long as there comes a time when you have no choice but to say, "Is it you Lord?" it matters not the circumstances.
