I think this kind of distancing happens in alot of cultures. For instance, Swedes don't like Norweigans, Norweigans hate Swedes, Danes don't like anyone and the Finnish people just feel left out so they don't care for any Scandinavians. It's as if there has to be some divisiveness.(sp?)
