“I’m in love with my wife, Carly, and my mistress, Jessica, and I don’t know what to do about it,” Mikey says.

“We’ve been together seven years. Mikey and I have a 3-year-old son together,” Carly explains. “Jessica and I hung out everyday. We became best friends; little did I know she was having an affair with my husband.”

Mikey says he and Jessica’s affair began with casual sex but later escalated to an intimate relationship. “Jessica and I started texting — we used to like to have sex with each other. We ended up making a deal where we’d do it once before we got married. We were having sex multiple times a week. I was cheating on Carly while we were engaged to get married,” he admits.

Mikey claims that he and Jessica stopped having sex roughly three weeks before his wedding, but reunited less than a month later. “Jessica and I ended up having sex within the week I was back from my honeymoon, and once we
spent more time together, I really started falling in love with her,” he says.

“When I found out about the affair, I felt like I couldn’t breathe. I felt like there was no way this was the Mikey who I married,” Carly confides. “There was no way this was my life — it was a horrible nightmare. What hurts the most is losing your whole life all in one day and never knowing if you’re going to get it back.”

“I don’t regret anything that I’ve done with Jessica because it’s been the best year of my life,” Mikey says. “I know for a fact that I love them both. In my perfect world, I would have them both by my side for the rest of my life.”


Untangling a Web of Lies


With only Mikey onstage, Dr. Phil asks, “Now, you wrote to me, right? What is your hope for being here today? What would be the home run outcome for you?”

<span style="font-weight: bold">“For me, personally, it would be to leave here with both of them,” he says.</span>

Dr. Phil asks Mikey why he didn't just marry Jessica, instead of choosing an affair. He says <span style="font-weight: bold">he never considered marrying her because he thought their
relationship would end after his wedding</span>. Jessica also married Mikey’s cousin, with whom she has a son, and Mikey was the best man in their wedding. “The original agreement was that it would stop once we got married, and both couples would just live happily ever after,“ he explains.


“But that fell apart,” Dr. Phil observes. “So, your home run, your dream scenario would be for me to convince these two women that it would be reasonable to have a three-way relationship, and just live together under one roof, and be happy?”

“I wouldn’t want you to have to convince them of that,” Mikey clarifies. “I’d want them to want to do it.”

Dr. Phil calls Carly and Jessica to the stage.

Dr. Phil turns to Carly and asks, “Tell me your goals for being here today. I asked Mikey what his home run is. What is yours?”

“That I leave with him,” she says. “My vows meant so much, and we have so much history, and I feel like we really were one. So, I don’t really see how something like that ends.”

“And what’s the home run for you?” Dr. Phil asks Jessica. “What would you like to see happen here?”

“I want to leave with Mikey,” she says.

“So, what you’re saying here is that Carly can just go and be upset if she needs to, but you want to leave with her husband,” Dr. Phil clarifies.

“Yes,” Jessica says, admitting that she wants to eventually marry Mikey.

“Would you be at all concerned that if you married her husband, that he would have an affair on you with his ex-wife?” Dr. Phil asks.

She admits that she does worry about a possible affair should she marry Mikey, but she doesn’t plan on quitting their relationship. “If I could talk to Carly, I would tell her, ‘I love you. I hope that one day you can forgive me, but I have no plans of backing off or letting Mikey go.’”

“Why are you not upset with him?” Dr. Phil asks Carly.

“I am upset with him,” she explains, “but when I look at him, I don’t see a cheater. I don’t know, I just see the person I love.“

Dr. Phil urges Carly to be honest about the situation. “This woman has interjected herself into your marriage. She is sleeping with your husband. You caught them red-handed in bed, right? What were they doing when you came in the room?” he asks.

Carly explains that she found Jessica and Mikey naked in bed together. She says Mikey ran into the bathroom, and Jessica initially hid behind the bedroom door. “But then she eventually came out onto the bed, and gave me this look like she was glad, [as if to say], ‘Oh well,’” Carly describes. Caught in the act, Jessica said that was their first time having sex, but Carly later learned they had an affair for nearly a year — even longer than her marriage to Mikey.

While sympathizing with Carly, Jessica admits that she doesn’t regret having an affair with her husband. “I know that Carly and Mikey are married,” she says. “I don’t agree with them still having sex, but I deal with it. It makes me very angry, and if I had a say, he would not be sleeping with his wife. At this point, knowing they still get together really hurts because I just feel like we really need a decision … I am definitely scared I will not feel this way again about another man as I do for Mikey.”

Dr. Phil rolls video footage of Jessica and Mikey strolling down a sidewalk together. The two are hand-in-hand, laughing.

“Does it upset you to watch that video?” Dr. Phil asks Carly.

“Very,” she says through tears. “That should be me.”

Now, you admit that other than this situation, you’re basically an honest person,” Dr. Phil says to Mikey. “Have you been honest with [Carly] about your degree of involvement [with Jessica]?”

&quot;We had sex everywhere ... cars, parks, hotels.&quot;

Jessica claims that Carly and Mikey were “at their happiest” in their marriage because of her relationship with Mikey.

“So, their marriage was at its best because of you?” Dr. Phil asks.

“Yes, that even came out of [Mikey’s] mouth,” Jessica says.

“How did that work?” he asks. “What was therapeutic about you for their marriage?”

“He was happy to be with me. I gave him confidence, I gave him compliments, and hers were just kind of generic, ‘Oh yeah, you look good today’ basically,” she explains.

Carly interrupts, “Of course you’re going to give him compliments. You were in a failing marriage, so he was telling you what bothered him about me.”

Jessica and Carly begin to argue. Jessica tells Carly that she was “fake” during their friendship and that they were never extremely close. Both women admit that they were “on-and-off-again” friends.

“But are you criticizing her for not cozying up to you?” Dr. Phil asks Jessica. “Because in fact, during that time, you were sleeping with her husband.”

“Yes, I was,” she agrees.

“As for the compliments thing,” Carly says, “I feel like he stopped listening to what I had to say because he was listening to her compliments more than mine.”

“Are you offended?” Dr. Phil asks Jessica.

Do you think that these two will ever be peaceful with each other?” Dr. Phil asks Mikey.

“Sure,” he says, “because they talked last night. They hung out several times last week.”

“So, you all hung out last week? What did you do?” Dr. Phil asks Jessica and Carly.

“We went to the movies together,” Carly answers. She explains that she and Jessica have had a tumultuous friendship for at least three months. She says she even considered entering a three-way relationship with Mikey and Jessica, but later changed her mind.

“We had great times together as three [people], so we thought that maybe [the three-way relationship] could work,” Carly explains. “We’d talk about it, we’d fight. We thought it could work so I went to [Jessica’s] house to talk to her about it, but then the next day, we’re back in square one, where neither one of us want that. We want him alone … deep down we know it can’t work, but we’re just searching for answers.”

<span style="font-weight: bold">Mikey laments that Carly constantly changes her mind about pursuing a three-way relationship</span>, and that she even once sent him a text message suggesting that she’d be happy with the arrangement. “I wasn’t the one who put [the idea of the three-way relationship] together that day,” he says. “They came to me with the ideas and the positives, and I told them, if we’re going to do it, then we need to commit to something, and not just keep going back and forth.”

“Do you believe it’s remotely realistic that these two women are going to just become sister wives, and live with you?” Dr. Phil asks. “Do you think that’s a real possibility, or do you think that while that’s what you’d like, it’s probably not going to happen?”

“At one time, I felt like it was a strong possibility,&quot; he says, acknowledging that a three-way relationship with Carly and Jessica is highly improbable

Mikey's Decision

Should Jessica and Carly not agree to a three-way relationship, Dr. Phil asks Mikey which woman he’d choose. “If you had to push a button; a ‘Carly’ button or a ‘Jessica’ button, which button would you push?”

<span style="font-weight: bold">“Me and Jessica get along great, and I love being with her. We get together, and we fight and argue, but I understand why. So, it’d be very easy for me right now to say Jessica, and we’d go on,” Mikey says, “but a month from now, a day from now, or even two hours from now, I might be laying next to Jessica thinking, I don’t want to do this, I made the wrong decision, and I want Carly</span>.”

“But you see, part of maturation, where you mature into different stages and phases in your life is that you recognize you have to make choices, then you have to live with those choices,” Dr. Phil explains. “And sometimes you make the right decision, and sometimes you make the decision right. But in one way or the other, you come out on the other end, in a way where your life is not in shambles emotionally, relationally or otherwise.”

Turning to Carly, Dr. Phil asks her, “Are you waiting for him to decide what happens to your life?”

“I feel like I’ve played out different scenarios in my head,” she says. “I sometimes feel like it is in his hands, but then I end up thinking, what am I even fighting for?”


Mikey explains that he approached Carly several times to talk about their marriage, but he claims she ignored him. He says even after they talked, Carly still seemed disinterested, broke up with him, started dating other men and said that she didn’t love him anymore.

“I never said I didn’t love you anymore,” Carly objects. “I never said that.”

<span style="font-weight: bold">Mikey's Decision</span>

Mikey says he believes he can truly make Jessica and Carly happy. “I mean, they fueled the fire of the three-way relationship, and made me think that it could work and to want to keep fighting for it.”

“I’ve been doing this longer than you’ve been alive,” Dr. Phil says. “There isn’t one chance in 10 million this is going to work. It will never, ever work where you have them both. There is no theory under which it would work. They could even agree that it could work, and you all start doing it, and it still would not work.”

Dr. Phil asks Mikey if he’s considered the future of his 3-year-old son. “Do you think this flies above his awareness so it doesn’t impact him yet?”

“To his level, I think it does impact him not living at home with mom and dad.”

“Do you feel at all bad about disrupting this family?” Dr. Phil asks Jessica.

She nods.

“You don’t feel bad about disrupting her marriage, but you do feel about the family aspect of it,” Dr. Phil observes.

“I never said I didn’t feel bad about it,” Jessica says, growing tearful. “I know my actions are showing differently, but it’s not like I don’t care about her. I just care about him, and I can’t let go and sorry isn’t going to cover it.”

“What you’re doing is you’re interloping into someone else’s marriage,” Dr. Phil says, “and I can tell you that relationships that are born from infidelity almost never, ever work. Everybody always thinks they’re the exception, but they just don’t work.”

Dr. Phil explains that Mikey and Jessica are “high-risk” candidates in relationships, and could likely cheat on each other or future partners.

“You need to finish one relationship before you start another one,” Dr. Phil tells Mikey.

Turning to Carly, he instructs, “And you need to cut [Jessica] out of your life, and work on your relationship if you are willing to do that. And if you are willing to do that, a lot of people are going to ask why. It simply may be time for you to accept reality and move on. He is a high-risk candidate, and the chances that these two are going to stop what they’re doing are close to zero … You’re young. You can remarry, you can find someone in your life who treats you with dignity and respect, because you are not being treated with dignity and respect now. You are being disrespected.”

Dr. Phil tells Carly and Mikey that he’s willing to offer them counseling in their hometown, if they’d like to heal their marriage.

“You can’t ride two horses with one [censored].&quot;

“Would you at all be interested in doing any type of marital work here?” Dr. Phil asks Mikey.

“Of course I would like to work on my marriage, but I’m just not really sure I can commit to it right now,” he answers.

Carly says she not entirely convinced with Mikey’s answer, but she’s willing to try at least one counseling session. Dr. Phil explains that ultimately, the counselor may just offer her personal support to help her make a final decision about her marriage.

“How do you feel about these two going into some counseling?&quot; Dr. Phil asks


Jessica. &quot;If that therapist said you need to stay out of here, and give them a chance to work this out, will you do that?”

“I promise,” she says through tears. “I’m not changing my heart about Mikey, but I’m just tired of doing all the wrong things.”

“Then maybe it’s time to start doing some of the right things for you and your child,” Dr. Phil says, “and let these people do the right things for their child.”
