Watched the documentary in its entirety. Very interesting indeed.

The documentary - Man a Gallis: Risk Factors For HIV/AIDS in the Dancehall - highlights some excellent data and comments from Dr. Donna Hope and Dr. Carolyn Cooper .

The premise of the documentary is that dancehall music encourages promiscuity and increases the risk of HIV and AIDS. The data in the video showed that HIV/AIDS in Jamaica is a HETEROSEXUAL disease. So why does this documentary spend so much time on discrimination against homosexuality?? These are two separate issues and I feel that each would do well standing on its own.

Wow. Dr. Donna Hope has some clear, succinct, and well-research facts and Dr. Carolyn Cooper just said it like it is: &quot;[The impression is that] a lot of [Jamaican] women are prepared to join line to wait for a man.&quot; Lawd.

Very interesting comment about the focus on discrimination. We will be interviewing the producer and will incorporate that question.

No. She's saying that is the recurrent theme in many dancehall songs and from these artists.

Later on in the film, Vybz Kartel, The Intellectual One , showed his asinine self by suggesting that there are 7 women to 1 man in Jamaica.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Alarming Rate of HIV/AIDS Infection</span>

There is a worrying trend of younger females contracting HIV/AIDS, with the 10-29 and 15-19 age groups accounting for the majority of the increase.

Four times as many young women in these age groups have been reported with AIDS than young men. Concurrently, adult males in the 30-79 age group account for a larger percentage of those contracting the disease.

This was revealed by Minister of Health Dr Fenton Ferguson, speaking yesterday at an open-day symposium to showcase current HIV and AIDS training interventions for health-care workers in the Caribbean, which took place at the University Hospital of the West Indies.

&quot;The demographics of the pandemic's spread in Jamaica has worrying implications, including indications of a growing prevalence of transactional sex among the young female cohort, perhaps related to increasing poverty and factors such as the superstitious belief that sex with a young virgin female will cure the disease,&quot; Ferguson stated.

He also revealed that the proportion of male to female AIDS cases has narrowed recently.

In 2010, males accounted for 53.2 per cent of reported cases, while females accounted for 46.8 per cent.

&quot;The gap used to be much higher in favour of males locally,&quot; he said.

The minister noted that of concern too was the fact that Jamaica had elements of both a generalised and concentrated HIV epidemic. He stated that the average prevalence in the general population was estimated at 1.6 per cent, but the most recent surveys showed higher HIV infection among at-risk groups, in particular men who have sex with men accounting for 32 per cent, and sex workers, 4.9 per cent.

&quot;It is perhaps instructive that the rate among sex workers has declined from a reported nine per cent in 2005, quite likely reflective of greater success at health education among this grouping,&quot; he shared.

He said there was still an issue of under-reporting of the disease, mainly because of the persistent stigma and discrimination associated with the illness.

You know as you talk bout Kartel.. I got to give one lickle credit to him .. in that video he is one articulate little bastard. Just a pity im noh use im intelligence in a positive way... cause what im was saying makes him look ignorant.

But it is true that a lot of women in JA ready to fall in line for these promiscuous men.

Beenie man talking about getting tested every time is rubbish and perpetuates this false sense of security that because you test negative today, you remain negative next week/month etc. The whole idea is PREVENTION. Im a get tested afta di fact. Im cyaan convince me that BEFORE im lay down wid a new ooman im go dacta goh get test. Kiss teet.

Xavier, in your upcoming interview it would be interesting to find out the sexual statistics on the promiscuity of the women as well.

The Statistical Institute of Jamaica (STATIN) reports the ratio of women to men in 2010 as approximately 51% female to 49% male

Therefore, if the average male is having half-dozen encounters each year, then we either have the average woman being equally active, or some women being even more active than their male counterparts.

Of course, sexual politics in Jamaica may reward open promiscuity in males and punishes it with females, so the truth may be hard to find.

but that is a commonly repeated myth in Jamaica. I used to hear it repeated often from back in school days.
