I think females who we as society consider to be pretty do get the same treatment if they have some sort of flaw..or what we consider to be a flaw. I love making fun of "pretty-dunce" females.

You know...you will never know if eddie is joking or he is serious. And because of that..i dont let it shuffle mi wedda.

Kingy, I am also talking about the way black men were presented in the movie.

Of course I would have made the same post. I am not saying that women like that don't exist, but really, can't we make a movie about a strong black woman, it may be comedy to some, but not everyone is seeing it as such. He has played the part of a big woman before but it was never this classless and in the nutty professor, he didn't even come close to dissing black men who are heavy the way he did in the movie.

There was not one thing positive about the movie. We were either big fat and ugly or slim pretty and stupid and the men were pimps, rib shack owning hustlers.

Kingy it is nto the fact that he played a heavy black woman, it is the way in which it was done, it had no taste and no class.

Waste of money.

I guess if I had to make a comparison, I'd throw Tyler Perry/Madea in with the Mrs. Doubtfire's &amp; Tootsie's of the world.



The women portrayed by Eddie Murphy in Norbit are in a whole 'nother category (the same one as the Big Momma's and Shenanah's (Martin Lawrence)). Somehow, it's just different.

I think Marie hit the nail on the head .. it's over-the-top tackiness/lack of class. I don't care for the portrayal either .. it seems waaaay negative. But hey, that's just me.

and honestly, no, I don't know any black women like that

Good points though. Women are more touchy because of the double standard. We have so much working against us, these types of movies don't help.

There are plenty of negative images of white men on TV, maybe not to the depths that you mentioned but....the alcoholic, unlcean house, neer do well, alimony dodger, child support neglecter, is all over TV and movies. I think Mel Gibson had some of these traits in a couple of the lethal weapon movies.

But since white men are ahead of the game, we don't tend to get riled up when they are portrayed that way on the screen.

Why is everyone going off the rail about this movie's portrayal of black women? How many big black women do you think will suffer at the hands of this movie?

Haven't we come much further than that by now? When are we going to overcome the insecurities of other people's projection on us as black women? This is ridiculous. We are way too sensitive. There are people dying for heaven's sake. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70400-talktohand.gif[/img]

I remember a long time ago, before my long absence from the board, MarieK speaking of the 'low life thugs in Harlem who have the nerve to say hello to her as she make her way to church'. I remembered the way she described those young men with such disdain and all I could think then was aren't they people too?. Those were real people and the same passion she showed against them is what I see being shown here against a silly movie.

First we shout loud and proud that all black people are not the same and then we rant and rave manically about a dumb movie's portrayal of a fictitious character. Is that really necessary?

I see no need for the outrage. It is a movie which should not define you if you are a big woman, just like every black man or woman in jail does not define 'us'. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70400-talktohand.gif[/img]

If nothing else, this should be a wake up call to the obesity problem too many black people have in our culture. We need to stop making excuses and face facts.

There are white men portrayed as everything in movies...they are the "norm", they can be anything...gangsters, heroes, good guys, bad guys, dumb, smart, sick, strong, weak...whatever can be imagined.

It's everyone else (besides white men) that are so often pigeon-holed into a particular "type", I think.
