One would hope that the wider family would be present to teach that child his/ her history, and about his culture. But with families so scattered these days, I see how that could be difficult. I don't understand how a person carries himself as a black person. I trust my partner enough, ethnicity aside, to raise our children in the way we would like. And children of inter-racial (black-white) relationships aren't just black...

I have a few friends who are the result of mixed race relationships......(including myself [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif[/img])

One friend her parents relationship ended in divorce and she had No exposure what-so-ever to the culture of one side. When she had her kids she made sure they got exposure to all sides of her cultures and their dad's culture from a very young age.

Another friend, one parent died when he was very young and the surviving parent re-married to a person of their same race. The dead parent was an only child and as a result my friend was raised completly Jamaican.

I could go on........

What I meant by "carries himself as a black person" was in no way meant to offend...

I just see now that no matter how much we want "One Love" and equality, we are still different, the strength in voice, the strength in spirit... there is a certain strength I feel in black people that is lacking in white people...

To me is seems the strength of the ancestors has been passed down through each generation, and has made the black race spiritually, emotionally and physically stronger...

His mother met his "dad" at work and dated for a month and then things fell apart. He moved on and only visited once. I'm the only one in the family that's concerned about heritage thing, it seems...and I'm not sure where to start. Hmmmm. thanks for this tred...looking forward to seeing where it goes...

I feel it is a valid concern...

I know that above all else children need love, and I believe that if they grow up knowing they are loved they will be ok...

But I don't know if "ok" is good enough...

Someone can have plenty of black friends, but none will be as vested in the childs upbringing as a childs father/mother would be.

What I think you can do is make sure you live in an area where the child will have influences of both his cultures or live in a city where there is access to it (found this on a transracial adoption site).

I think I understand what you mean. For me, I would like to pass on to my daughters the strength of spirit that the women in my family possess.(I am yet to manifest that gene, I think). I want my sons to have the strength and independence of character that my grandfather had, for all his other faults. I do not know how to give that to them, when it is likely they will grow up without the contact with their elders, in a country that refers to them as a 'minority'.I understant minority in that coloured folk make up whatever precentage of the population. But I find the term, demeaning somehow. It's as if you are defeated even before you start.

I totally agree, a few of the males in my son family have kids from interacial relationships, the heritage of both parents must b considered....wider family circles count for a lot when raising interacial kids.

i am not raising a mixed race child but i am still faced with helping him have a positive image of his blackness, his culture and his color

my son is quite dark and that has raised it's own issues with the other kids and questions from him

i'm open with him about race - our friends are all cultures - and i reinforce him with black cultural experiences - including trips to Jamaica

and i constantly emphasis what kind of MAN i expect him to be and point out role models for him - regardless of colour
