I agree, why are you giving him the upper hand? Take your power back, you don't have to take any of his advice or mental games he's playing. Sometimes you can't be "friends" after a break up.

I had been dating this one guy for 2 years, we tried the just being friends thing but it didn't work. Every time he would call or stop by he would conveniently "forget" that we were only friends and nothing more. That as well as just not giving him any attention. The more you give him the upper hand the more he will harass you.
