I was not sure where to put this story. It could go fashion, religion or entertainment. I choose relationship because I wanted to ask the questions. Do you think her preacher husband (smiling below) is in agreement with this? The bigger question for the ladies is this...does the occupation/status of your significant other define your style when you are in relationship/marriage?

Good caused a lot of controversy when she rolled into the BET Awards wearing an outfit that looked like it was picked out by Lil Kim’s dirty older sister: Her body parts were in full display, with the dress going down to her navel.
Some thought that her outfit was not exactly fitting of a preacher’s wife, but Good seems defiant in believing that she can dress and act however she wants and that it doesn’t make her any less holy than anyone else. If that’s true, then does that mean that an adult film star can also say they have as good of a connection to God as anyone else?


Good recently spoke about the issue, saying that she thinks that the constraints of the church are simply unfair. Good appears to believe that God is the one who is telling her to wear the outfits that she puts on in public, and that it can’t be anything else.


“Some people feel like I should wear a turtleneck or something but that’s not who I am. If that’s not what God tells me to do then I’m not going to do that to make other people comfortable,” she said during an interview on Vlad TV.

Good also says that she represents young women who are being misjudged for the way they dress. She also says that she is building God’s kingdom, even when she is half-naked.


“I’m comfortable with me, I love me. And I feel like I speak to girls and women that are like me…That are often misjudged and often looked down or talked about because people don’t get their heart or their spirit based off something as small as what they might choose to wear that day.”


“…I try to be love and light to them, I try to do what I can to build God’s kingdom and reach people that I immediately connect with because we are similar,” she continued.

Unbelievable. Here is the deal. God is never going to tell someone to do something that he has already forbidden in scripture and the Bilbe is REALLY CLEAR that women are to dress modestly.

Clearly they are wolves in sheep's clothing... make that half clad wolves with hardly any clothing.

Using The Bible To Slut-Shame Megan Good. If She Was Not A Preacher’s Wife Would Dress Be Ok?

Many people may question why I am writing this piece, considering that I am an atheist. My response to those people is that I am compelled as an atheist activist to hold religious views, especially judgmental ones, accountable. I am also a feminist, so I am deeply concerned with the way that ideas about gender play themselves out in our sexist world.

There has been much conversation about Meagan Good appearance at the 2013 BET Awards. Many people supported Meagan Good’s decision to wear a royal blue dress with a deep cut neckline that showcased her amazing body. However, there have been many people who attacked her for wearing the dress as she presented in the gospel category. People have claimed that no woman, but especially a “woman of god” and a preacher’s wife, should wear that type of dress. Not only are people slut-shaming Meagan Good–policing her womanhood and sexuality, but people are also attacking her Christianity, her right to be a Christian.
As I mentioned earlier, I am an atheist. I have found it impossible to reconcile my Black or gay identities with a religion that was primarily imposed on Black people during slavery, and one that continues to be used to dehumanize gay people. That being said, I find it impossible to remain silent when I see Christianity being used to shame someone. The sexism in the Bible, and the sexist way I saw women treated in churches, were two of the major things leading me towards atheism. The sexist and misogynistic comments being made about Meagan Good remind me of the sexism and misogyny that made me question religion and eventually helped me to embrace a politics of atheism and secular humanism.

I do not pretend to be the most well-versed person in Biblical theology, but I was raised in the Black church, and I have taken a number of courses on religion. And it is my understanding that the Bible makes it clear that no one should really be judging anyone. I’m thinking, specifically, of John 8:7 which states “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at.” Something tells me that the people throwing stones at Meagan Good aren’t without “sin” themselves, aren’t perfect Christians themselves.The shaming of women and girls is all too common among the patriarchal religions of the world–Christianity, Islam, Judaism. Whether it is shaming Eve for eating the apple, erasing Mary Magdalene from the gospels, or shaming women like Meagan Good for not dressing “appropriately”, the attacks on women are common and unrelenting.
I wonder if the people judging Meagan Good realize that notions on gender, and what is acceptable, has changed quite a bit throughout history? Even in Christianity, what is and isn’t acceptable continues to change. There was a time when it was widely believed that women were to remain silent or subservient in the church. The notion that a woman had no business bringing the word or occupying a leadership position in a church. Fortunately, these sexist views have been on the decline, and women preachers and pastors are stepping into positions of power and influence in the church. The risk that Christians, and all of us, run when we are complicit in the shaming and policing of women like Meagan Good is that we give cushion to people who think that women should not be allowed to do certain things. We need to move as far as we can from this kind of problematic thinking.
Ultimately, Meagan Good made a decision as a confident and self-assured woman. I’m sure she knew that not everyone was going to agree with her choice, but she made the choice anyhow. This is one of the most powerful decisions that a woman, or any person, can make in a sexist and patriarchal world. Lesbian poet June Jordan once stated, “When you are free you are not predictable and you are not controllable.” Meagan Good deciding to wear that dress, even while presenting in the gospel category, was both unpredictable and a sign of her not being controlled, a sign of her freedom.


Instead of shaming and policing women for the choices they make, especially something as silly as wearing a “daring” dress to the BET Awards, of all places, how about we examine our own sexist and misogynistic thinking that compels us to constantly obsess over and judge women, holding them to double standards that we would never do for men.

Meagan good, Hollywood actress, who is now married to a pastor dressed in this raunchy blue number this past Saturday, at the BET Awards in California. People were outraged and she posted the comment (top right), justifying her looks. Can someone please remind Ms Good that this is not KING Magazine (below) but a slutty fashion choice?
