sterling silver is reasonable . . .
i like to have a gift so i can open it on christmas and through the years remember that special gift and when i received it from him
to me - a gift certificate just gets lumped into the stuff i buy for myself on an every day basis . . .
plus
people usually spend more on a gift than a gift certificate - especially if they see something they <span style="font-style: italic">want</span> to give you

Again, he doesn't know what his lady friend's taste is. She may not even like jewelry or worst yet you get something and she"s allergic to silver or gold.
As far as people spending more on a gift than a gift certificate that's just greedy. Appreciation shouldn't be how much a gift costs but thanking him for thinking of her period. Besides he can always get a visa gift card and add money on it from $25.00 up to $200.00.
