Pageant with a difference
THERE is a new beauty pageant in Jamaica. The Miss Jamaica Nation contest was launched last Thursday at the A Bar Restaurant and Lounge in St Andrew.
After 20 years of hosting Miss Jamaica USA, Ken Williams is set to stage the inaugural contest, which is modelled after the Miss World and Miss Universe pageants but there are differences. A most noteable difference is that it stresses "natural beauty".
The pageant's guidelines define natural as being devoid of the use of any artificial enhancements, such as: hair extensions, tattoos, alterations to the physique whether by surgery or clothing, fake eyelashes, and coloured contact lenses.
"I appreciate the fact that both the Miss World and Miss Universe contests have provided our young ladies and Jamaica with significant opportunities to shine on the world stage. However, I still feel that there is an opening and a need for a pageant such as our own," Williams noted.
He added; "When the team looked at all the products on the market created to give our women that extra 'help', we began to question the subliminal messages being communicated to both our women and impressionable young girls. The Miss Jamaica Nation pageant provides us with the perfect platform to deliver an alternative one that boosts their self-esteem and self-worth."
The inaugural Miss Jamaica Nation will be crowned on August 23 at the Courtleigh Auditorium in New Kingston.

What is wrong with having a natural beauty contest? As long as all of the contestants really are natural..just can't please some a onoo.Comment
