Recently, ground-breaking and historical advancements have occurred in the ongoing battle of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. After Cuba recently celebrated a 100% prevention of mother-to-newborn transmission of the virus, America has cause for a victory of their own: a Black doctor has been given the exclusive license for the HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) vaccine that could potentially help prevent the virus and treat those who already have it.
Dr. Mathew Wayne Whitest and his Wayne Pharmaceuticals team were granted the license after month-long negotiations were resolved at the end of April. The vaccine itself, however, is still in its development phase at the University of Massachusetts Medical School. Human clinical trials are scheduled starting as early as Spring 2016.
The licensure, which became effective on May 15, 2015, is indeed a significant leap for the Black community in the United States as the quest for an AIDS cure shows signs of reaching the finish line:
“As an African American, as a Physician, and as a member of Humanity at large, I am proud to share these announcements with you,” Dr. Whitest wrote in a recent statement.
