Talk show Diva Tyra Banks plans to trade in her trademark weave for her own flowing locks and she’s challenging other women to do the same.

Tyra said:

“This season on The Tyra Show we’re taking it to the next level and getting more real than ever before by encouraging women everywhere to own and rock what they’ve got and be proud! For the Season 5 premiere, I will be doing just that - no fake hair, I’m rocking my REAL hair. This will all be going down on September 8, 2009, which we’re declaring National Real Hair Day! We welcome everyone to go natural with me!”

Tyra believes there is nothing sexy anymore about horse hair or Yaki no matter how you style it. It’s still horse hair.

Some of our women see weave as an absolute necessity because they can’t afford to get their hair done every week. Others have convinced themselves that their men like weave and that’s why they wear it. But every man I’ve spoken to laugh at weave wearing chicks behind their backs. They see hair weave as a sort of prosthesis for black women who can’t grow hair.

It diminishes our self worth and decreases our value. That’s why many brothers flaunt LSLH chicks (with real hair, not synthetic) in our faces. They want their kids to have good hair so they won’t have to use weave as a crutch all their lives.

The Domican salons are increasingly crowded with black women who have finally figured out that the key to growing hair is to stop abusing it with hair glue, flat irons, curling irons and harsh chemicals.

ahmmm I think black women flock to the dominicans is because they know how to take the african out of black hair. The dominicans have made it a hair factory.. you go in and come out without the all day bizness

The entire piece is hilarious...and then, who is Tyra Banks?

Just saw her show and was asking my niece if that is her hair, they did a good job if it is not. In any case, I thought that Tyra was watching the Wendy Williams show, where Wendy was talking about &quot;her&quot; tresses...btw, her show I ain't watching in protest for...those weaves are just too much.

In any case, I find the repentance of Tyra Banks hilarious..

Tyra Banks has &quot;stripped off&quot; in New York. The model peeled off her clothes in Union Square with a dance mob to celebrate the fifth season of The Tyra Banks Show. However, underneath her outfit was a nude suit, not her birthday suit.


People magazine also revealed that the glamorous star will show viewers what she looks like without her weave on the first show. Banks will show her audience her natural locks.

Tyra Banks continued her relentless campaigning on behalf of freakishly beautiful people everywhere, this time “stripping down” — to a bodysuit, anyway — in New York’s Union Square to promote the new season of her talk show. This particular act, to me, is neither egregious nor provocative — that attire in any other color would just be run-of-the-mill yoga wear. But she is also declaring the date of the show’s premiere, Sept. 8, National Real Hair Day, on which she’ll go weave-less.

It all begs the question of whether ‘the America’s Next Top Model host’s ongoing message of “celebrating inner and outer beauty and owning and rocking what you’ve got” is a little much coming from, let’s face it, one of the most stunning women in the world. I’m torn: She really has taken her share of outrageous hits from snotty bloggers and raggy magazines who take perverse delight in pointing out that she, like most women over 30, has cellulite. Not cool, no matter how gorgeous or famous a person is. (You might as well point out that she breathes air or is made of flesh with an underlying structure of bone.) And I applaud her for celebrating her natural self (for at least one whole day!) while continuing to show that even supermodels have to work to look like they do; that makes us all feel a little better about our average selves.

But by the same token, she’s far from average, and it can grate on a regular girl’s insecurities to see somebody who looks like Tyra going on about loving her inner self and embracing her physical flaws as that which makes her unique, blah blah blah. It’s weird how much easier it is to love your inner self when you also have flawless skin and perfect bone structure.

So what do you think, PopWatchers? Is Tyra doing good by taking on the issue of body image? Or is she just making matters worse?
