Sister Locks

I am contemplating getting them.

Does anyone on the board have them? If not, do you know somebody who does?

Please post whatever information you have (I already went on their website) I just want personal stories at this time.

Has anyone experienced any positive things with their hair or any breakage and/or problems with this method?

Most postive thing that I have ever done for my hair. I dont have problems with breakage, my only complaint is that I have no one to do the tightening process for me. My biggest complaint. No Locticians in OKC!

I know someone who has them. She said she wanted to grow out her perm, but didn't want to cut off the 10 or 12 inches of permed hair that she worked for years to grow. I think that her initial consultation with the loctician was for a couple of hours; one thing that I know she had done was the loctician put in a few sisterlocs so that she could see how she liked them, how her hair responded, etc. She showed them to us at work. After a couple of weeks of having just that section braided she had her whole head done.

I don't know about the cost everywhere, but here it was very expensive. Very. We haven't been in touch for awhile, but I think the only thing she didn't like about the Sisterlocs was the fact that they weren't as "wash and wear" as she'd hoped. She knew that getting them done was expensive, but the maintenance was more expensive than she expected, it had to be done fairly often, and she wasn't able to do it herself. For her it ended up costing more than her perm, since she was a do-it-yourself-girl like me (only going to a salon for touch-ups every few months, doing everything else herself).

The only other person I know who has them is very happy. I think part of the reason is that she didn't get them to save money or to be fashionable or to have long hair. She really wanted to do something natural for her hair, as she was tired of it not being healthy due to excessive perming. Hers look great, and I think she's had them in for 3 or 4 years. She goes to have them done every few weeks, because she likes to treat herself. She has said, though, that you can take classes to learn how to do maintenance on the locs yourself if you want to save money.

It is expensive to get it locked, if you are having the Sista Locs put in vs. twisting or other starting methods.

It cost me $400 back in '00 when I had mines put in. The prices are pretty standard (at least they were in San Diego). My average trip to the loctician cost me appx $50 including tip ( I had the hookup) [img]/forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif[/img] How often you have them tighten depends on the individual and I guess the look that you are trying to achieve.

I am strictly a wash and go girl, so my maintenance would be low $$$ wise, if I was not doing it myself. I had a lot of perm on my hair when I orginally got it done, due to I did not want to cut the length. I would have had to cut my hair down to appx 1 1/2 to 2 inches at that time.

Thanks to all of you that replied.

I myself heard the sisterlocks were very expensive and time consuming to maintain.

I visited a loctitian this weekend and let her have a look at my scalp and she gave me a warning "if you continue to chemically relax your hair - your thinning will get much worse" [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70361-embarassed.gif[/img]

The loctitian would start regular locs for me within a few months or so depending on the amount of new growth I had. She would use the double strand twist method - I too am iffy about whether I should cut it and twist it or just have the two strand twist done with an extension added on until my own hair start to loc. She said she would have to cut my permed hair off. Well if I have to do that I will just do it.

As far as huzzie is concerned - he knows that I have an interest in it and he asked me "what - you a plan fe locks yu hair? When I said - "maybe" he said to me "You crazy"

In that case "Me Mad!!"

If you ready to loc your hair then go for it. You cannot look to others for affirmation. You hair is about to go thru many changes, and you have to be very comfortable

Depending on your job situation only you can decide if you can start with locs at the 1-inch new growth (personally I think this would be healthier for your hair at the moment) or extension method (Would this be yarn or something else?)

Make sure when she parts your hair it's not too small or else you'll run into problems down the road....you'r hair thinning out too fast...from all the twisting from regrooming the hair...

Well if a style dem want they have to tell the loctian and den them get the two strand twist

When I went and said I wanted to loc my hair, they gave me a book to read about locing the hair, orign, acceptance, different stages the hair will go thru etc.

Sassyras and Dahjah you bring a good point to this thing call Sista Locks.


I went to another loctitian who does not do sistalocks and actually was not too into them - she have the regular dread locks and they look very nice. I'm not looking necessarily into "style" I just want to create a healthy environment for my hair and to prevent further breakage down the line.

Not to mention the sistalocks is very expensive.

been locked for 12 years and never looked back - it was a glorious day when i threw away my hair dryer, rollers, curling iron and combs -

i started with 2 inch locks - a year later they were swinging

a friend started with 2 strand twists and palm rolled them until they dreaded

haven't had any problems in corporate america at all - even worked internationally - no problems
