Mi watching TV One and dem talking about 100 influencial black people and dem bring up Madam CJ Walker.

This young chick say "imagine looking into the mirror and not loving yourself or what you look". Basically she saying that Ms Walker invented the hair creme for this reason. Now mi know sey dat is not the reason why Ms. Walker invented the hair creme, but do ppl really think so.

i've said it before, but we invent ourselves in the image of what is perceived to be the majority. it's a necessity i suppose. anyway a 2 a clack. i have to go crawl back into my coffin until sun-up so i can feed.

My understanding was that it was during the time when black women were increasingly spending time working and becoming more active outside of the home, which was not allowing enough time to "manage" their hairs, she thought it necessary to invent the hotcomb to make the managing of the hair easier.

The FOOLS who associate straight hair with beauty will believe whatever makes them stay lost.

she created a monster-- and got very rich doing it

i can't knock her hustle...if not her someone else would have found a way- after all, necessity is the mother of invention, and people (not just women in those days) of african descent <span style="font-style: italic">needed</span> a way to fit in with the dominant society and feel more accepeted...it's the same concept as skin-lightening; that is to become more similar in appearance to those who are perceived as being 'better'...
it's a natural human reaction, albeit mentally enslaving...
everything on earth is perception,and once the perception became accepted that africoid hair is somehow inferior or defective, then people's minds accepted the lame excuses that straight hair is more 'beautiful' or more 'manageable' or more 'professional' or more whatever...
women will always style their hair...but the obsession that gripped african women in terms of achieving straight hair after madame walker is an interesting psychological case study for moi..

I hear and respect your opinion, however, I do not see how you are in any position to voice your opinion on the 'manageability' of a WOMAN'S hair. Sorry, having a daughter with hair does not pass for being a woman with unmanageable hair. The hair industry is a booming business first for white women, asian women, hispanic women and then black women.

Women in general have an issue with hair management and if your obsession wasn't so exclusive, you would have noticed that fact.

oh yea this culture/religion taught you that a woman has to have longer hair than men so you now consider that a woman and man were not born with the exact same hair...
why is it that black men don't have this 'managability' issue?
because society said natural hair is ok for black men now but women need theirs to be longer &amp; styleable;

yes we are entitled to our opinion and i am grateful for the forum to express mine...your code word about managability is another way to say 'nappy hair'...&amp; is a completely different issue from straight-haired women...
we are now saying that black girls/women need to eliminate their natural texture because the way god made it just nah manage...
i guess god made a mistake when he/she designed the afrcoid hair texture...

but personally i don't believe it...i think god knew what he/she was doing

Most boys and men have their hairs cut short way before it gets to the length that requires work to maintain.

There are women and men who choose to leave their hairs in its natural state i.e. no brushing or combing, and may find that easier to maintain. If not left alone, it is NOT EASY to manage.

Whether you want to accept it or not, it is only in the last say, ten years or so, that I have seen that particular style as an &quot;accepted&quot; way to wear the hair, especially if you are to work for the policy makers. Most who did wear their hairs uncombed/uncut were either self-employed or unemployed.

<span style="font-weight: bold">YOUR code word about managability is another way to say 'nappy hair'</span> not mine. in other words, my definition IS NOT YOURS.

You might also think that God made a mistake when he made non-black people non-black, since they seem to spend an awful amount of time darkening their complexion. Whatever you want to think you are free to think it.

the people who tan don't paint themselves black...they darken their own skin tone with the sun's rays...they don't chemically alter their skin color the way people chemically alter their hair....
and just as many black people bleach or avoid the sun for complection reasons as well;

my point is about hair...and no matter how you slice it, no race actively tries to hide their natural hair texture to the extent of african women;

You are right about that point. But that is the only one.

Peoples of African descent are the only ones with their unique texture, so that could be why the hairs they buy look like every other race's. Ohh well. I wear my own texture out of CHOICE and believe everyone has the right to exercise their own choice.

Human being are social beings and social beings usually adopt to the most influential habit appearance of the dominant group..

If blacks were dominant in society, others would adopt our looks and behavior.
