maybe she is a product of an older generation? I know my mother has made comments to me about how girlKia's hair looks sometimes. eg ponytail or just out cause dat is the way girlKia want to wear her hair at times.

s Samuels actually does a decent job of summarizing the societal pressures that are faced by black women both inside and outside of the African-American community when it comes to our hair.

Unfortunately and ironically Ms. Samuels not only does not challenge these constructs, she instead reinforces them by visiting her issues and complexes on a 4 year old child. This piece demonstrates that the assault on black womanhood starts early. The lack of self confidence that many young black women face, which manifests itself in high HIV rates, high teen pregnancy rates and unhealthy relationships is not the result of the condition of their hair, but instead the result of a society that is constantly from a very early age telling them that they are not good enough or worthy enough just as they are - hair and all.

The dirty little secret that the conversations surrounding the movie &quot;Good Hair&quot; have exposed is not what black women do to their hair and how much they spend, but instead how the black culture has internalized and perpetuates such a negative self-image that it would drive women to such extremes. While it is easy to lay the blame on the larger society, the black community itself, in the form of Ms. Samuels and many others like her, has to take responsibility for the damage it does by co opting and reinforcing this negative mindset and contributing to our own oppression. The craziest part is that most white people don't give a rat's about what black women's hair looks like or prior to this movie even had a clue about how our hair got that way.

<span style="font-weight: bold">Chris Rock himself is guilty of this. While promoting his movie on the Oprah Winfrey Show, Rock referred to a picture of Ms. Winfrey when she was an 8 year old child as her having &quot;slave hair&quot;. while he raved and raved and raved about being able to run his fingers through the silky tresses of Oprah's current hair (ironically this response in his own child to a white girl's hair is what supposedly sparked the movie in the first place). While he may have been seeking a laugh, the power of his words were not lost on me. He again was reinforcing the belief that you should aspire to an aesthetic that is not our own and the more that you resemble something you are not the better you somehow are. I would argue that this mindset (also demonstrated by Ms. Samuels) is really what resembles the slave.</span>150 years after the end of slavery we have a black President, yet are still carrying around its remnants - sad.

The goal should be to break the cycle and teach our children to love themselves for who they are and how they look, so that when they run up against the walls of a society that tries to define them they are so sure of themselves that they can break through these walls. That is how a child achieves confidence, not by combing their hair. </div></div>

totally agree with this...

as far as the zahara thing, the feeling i get from speaking to my own black woman is that she wouldn't mind seeing her in some different styles sometimes- whether cornrows or braids---or twists;
but that is a different issue than those who are longing to see her hair straightened out...
i prefer her hair be kept natural &amp; definitely glad brangelina didn't burn out her hair

waves been around, but only possible with low haircuts &amp; definitely not even remotely close to being an obsession with black males the way creming &amp; hot comb was to black females;
there was conking back in the day &amp; jheri curls in the 80's, but black men by &amp; large usually go natural--hence the jokes when people see men like al sharpton who still conk

i've noticed quite a few men dye their hair

took abu to the orthodontist yesterday - his hair was dyed - i couldn't take my eyes off of it
