Colored hair care

If you color your hair, what shampoo/conditioner do you use to keep your color looking beautiful??

I'm going broke on hair care products, so I'm hoping to find at least shampoo/conditioner a little cheaper..

My stylist says red is the hardest to keep looking good between touch-ups...

Hi Patty:

That's a good question. I'm gray now and gave up perming and coloring due to damage to the hair. Gray hair, I'm finding, is hard to work with.

Would like to go back to coloring my hair so, I would be interested in some good advice before I begin to color again. I find beauticians, will do it, but won't treat the hair so it stays healthy. If you don't know to ask, they won't tell you about caring for colored hair.

Looking forward to the experts advice, as well.

I have always found Pantene products to work well -they have a new line for colored hair called expressions - Link below.

I color my hair, and have minimal trouble with damage - I use an intensive conditioner once a week, and a mask once a month of mayonnaise (sounds gross, but it works) - Depending on what color my hair is (I am known to change, lol), I will also use other things - like tea rinsed through reddish hair, coffee rinsed through brown hair.

I use ABBA shampoo and conditioner. It is $30.00 for a big bottle of both and it lasts 6 months so if you break it down it is cheaper than the store bought shampoos and conditioner. It smells great and it has mint in it and it makes your head tingle. You might have to have a beatician order it for you but it is worth it. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70409-waytogo.gif[/img]

There is a hair care line name HALO that is excellent for colored hair. You can check in fine beauty supply shops or maybe your beautician can order it for you.

Thanks, Legal and PLV for the advice. I would color it myself to ensure the hair got proper care.

I often felt when the stylist mix the color they don't always do a proper mixing of the chemicals.

I also hear Nutrisse and Garnier of good because they moisturize while coloring. Do you agree?

You have to be careful with some of those products. If at all possible it is best to get a shampoo with no alcohol that would prevent your hair from drying out...you must remember to get a very good conditioner for your hair as to keep your hair from getting dry and brittle. Geez, the one that comes to mind is one in a yellow jar, it is fairly new. When my "Senior Moment" is over I'll let you know what it is.

You can always use less shampoo, Patty, especially if you wash your hair often. Apply diluted shampoo directly to scalp and only lather once. Shampoo strips your natural oils and conditioners are just to restore the balance.

If you're hair is curly you can use the no-poo curly girl method to keep your hair from drying out.

Tecky: a know what you mean by "senior moments" have plenty myself these days. This is all good info. I'm tired of wearing the gray and am seeking a change soon.

CastleM try Natural Essences - brown box... I play dangerous and leave in for much longer than suggested - colour will be complete and last longer, but use conditioner a couple times per week.

Thanks everyone - for your thoughts.
I had my hair colored last week. I asked my stylist what shampoo/conditioner I should be using - to protect my color. She said (and she has said before) to use Pureology
I went to a beauty supply store and asked their (so-called) expert - she also said to use Pureology. She said it is the best. So, I spent (again) $24.19 on a bottle of shampoo and $24.19 on a bottle of conditioner. It lasts me about 2 months per bottle. Too much, huh??

I'm sort of afraid of those new "red" colored shampoos. What if it changes the color of my hair?!?! I have some burgundy highlights in there, too, so mi scared!! [img]/forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif[/img] [img]/forums/images/graemlins/70367-help.gif[/img]

Thanks Patty and Sista: This is all good info. I'm just getting my hair healthy again. After many years of coloring and perming, did a number of my hair.

Looks ok now without a perm or color but that was from diligent conditioning, no perm, no color and this has been about a year in the making. Hair is healthy again.

To me, I looked a mess for a year but I wore it proudly (even though I knew it was looking a mess about the head). But the end result, has been a positive one.

I feel the hair could take chemicals now.

Yah - I know what you mean. My hair was SO damaged (dry, dull, frizzy) when I used to bleach it. I was blonde for years, until I tried red! Now, I LOVE my hair color, but it's SO expensive! Since I've changed to red, my hair is really healthy and strong, and shiny...
