Re: Miss Universe 2010 - Black Beauties
Jah-yout .. Please don’t read me out of context
It is not as simplistic as natural hair is the "dark ages" and straight hair is "modern times”.
Honestly - I am truly disappointed sometimes by the dogmatic attitudes of some women and men when it comes to black woman and their hair. Black women’s hair will always be cause for discussion whether you are wearing a weave, relaxing your hair or wearing your hair natural. Now, I do think that if we think about the history of Black hair, there are reasons why some people are only about the weave or perm and why some people are choosing to wear their hair naturally. But Jah_yout we have choices in this age (and I include ALL RACES in that “WE”).
Hair weave is NOT the bane of the Black woman’s existence and it’s not just simple about what hair she chooses to wear. It’s about her pride. It’s also about being confident in who you are whether your hair is permed, weaved or natural. Frankly, we have heard BOTH sides of this debate - “Look at that nappy afro. She needs a perm,” and “Black women who don’t wear their natural hair are subscribing to the European standard of beauty.” These generalizations sound incongruous and if they are going to be applied, must be done on an individual basis.
In closing, can we just let the black woman be who she wants to be for Petes sake!! I hope that is not too much to ask
