'Fashion over style' is one of the famous lines by the late Bogle, dancer and fashion trend 'settah' in the music industry.
The extent to which this statement is true is evident with the latest trend in the fashion world. But what does this statement really mean? And what are the repercussions of 'fashion over style'? Obviously some people don't know or they are just plain naive (or just playing naive), or they have just simply defined and/or re-defined fashion and style. The festive season was a prime example of what can go wrong with attire as 'everyone' got the opportunity to display his/her latest 'bling bling'.
The comedian Blakka says that he prefers style and not fashion (in other words, style over fashion). In this argument, and I totally agree with him, style is basically sticking to what you feel comfortable in. Many of my students would be quick to say, 'Bun im' because sticking to one's style would mean that you will be left behind. To survive in this day and age you have to be a 'trendsettah'. But CeCile has a problem with this acclaimed 'fashion over style'. She wants men to stick to their own style and/or their own fashion because 'she caan hat again 'cause a di man dem/dem a buy aff (her) blouse an (her) pants dem.'
I can remember the days when a man would not even dare to wear the colour pink. But pink is no longer the official girl colour but the esteemed male colour. They have suddenly become 'Pink Panthers'.
Greasing the skin to put on the very, very tight jeans is now the 'in-ting'. My colleague told me that his friend's girlfriend normally calls him to tell him when the hipsters reach. In addition, men are now visiting the hair saloon frequently. Again I say, 'Fashion over style.'
Picture a man in his tight jeans, his hair well 'do-up', his ears pierced (probably about two times), wearing his Muschino (not really hot anymore); and his 'gense'. Many people are on the lookout for these metrosexuals and their claim to fame. Some people now have difficulty identifying the persons who are males and those who are females. Everything concerning 'gender-ness' (or in this case genderless) has been blurred into obscurity. What a piece a mix-up 'inna' Jamdown.
