this is par for the course...when I started my locks years ago...i got way more flack from black people dan others..for the most part they were just curious and dem still hiya me..promote me an put me in front of dem corporate customers..aye sah.

Well, I am glad that you have found a company to hire you, Arjen. No prob... but I still believe for the most part that it's a fashion statement for many rather than any heightened form of black consciousness.
When you get a little older you will probably smile at the colonial comment as the barber goes... snip... snip snip...since shock value will have gone...for a newer fad.

i've been wearing dreads since 1993 and i work in Corporate America - making excellent money - and right now i work for the largest bank in the USA - not a teller

this is not a fashion statement for me - this is wearing my natural hair and expressing my black consciousness and pride and dreads have been around since the beginning of time (read - 400 Years Without A Comb)

i've traveled for work all over the world - with dreads - no problems - not even a mention

i don't have to dye and fry my hair to make me "appropriate" for the work place

it's what's in my head - not whats on it

and there will be no clip clip ever

and if you think you are hiding your blackness with straight hair - you're kidding yourself - 'cause your employers can see you

oh and before the dreads i wore braids and i successfully sold computer software to Fortune 100 companies - had to spend at least $250,000 for my product

i finally realized the braids were just another form of "weave"

so shandra what hairdo do you suggest for the workplace that is not frivolous?

Yep..found two of them...and I work with Fortune 500 customers...I've had my locks for well over 10 yrs and I'm probably a lot older than you assume. Actually, the relaxers where I walked away with sores on my scalp and the shaved head and sculpted fros were the fad [img]/forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif[/img]

whether its a fashion statement or an expression of black consciousness it should not prevent someone from been hired
