decide how big u want the locks to be...separate the hair into the section one at a time...twist it...i.e. with each section , further divide into two and twist those two parts...that is all u have to do really...all that junk about using wax etc is not necessary...it only allows stuff to get stuck in the hair and as u will not be combing the strands, wateva gets stuck in the wax etc will be there foreva an eva ....until the hair starts to lock u cannot wash his hair or the twists will seperate...so clean the scalp using Sea Breeze or some other astringent...after u clean wid the astringent, because it is also a drying agent, wipe the scalp with water and massage in some olive oil ..try not to use the commercial hair oils which have heavy parts of petroleum as petroleum is heavy and will juss clog up the pores of the scalp not to mention make anything stick to the hair...once hair starts to lock u can wash and twist new growth...i would not recommend that u use the comb to twist as is done so much in beauty shops...it puts a tightness to hair roots which is damaging in the long run...as for shampoos, try to stay away from ones wid a lot of alcohol..also a drying agent...groom the hair by using a tweezer or similar thing to take any foreign objects from locks ....once anything gets 'rooted' into locks, it will stay an lead to untidy, dirty look...as the hair locks, make sure u separate it carefully wen u wash...once separate locks start 'locking' together, u have to 'tear' them apart wen u wash, so dat is why it is important to do the hair on regular schedule...do it on schedule so that u do not have to tear locks apart to separate them...

this is wat i am use to ...having tended many a locks before i got mine and since wid mine...u may find that some parts will lock faster than others...hope it works out for u...should be easy since he is young an can sit in ur lap as u deal wid his hair

Thank you evanovich for all the information.

I have heard wax is bad, and I have struggled to find products for his hair as it is. It gets dry real easy, and I have tried several hair lotions and such....

Do you use olive oil on the locks themselves, or just on the scalp? Once I start shampooing, is there certain shampoo or conditioner you would suggest? And should I shampoo every other day??

When I am making the sections, I should just twist them to keep them apart? No clips or bands?

I have seen a twist where you take two strands and twist them the same way, and then twist them around each other... would that stay better??

DAX has a vegetable shampoo that i have been using for years...yeah DAX is old school America it would seem but i found this shampoo in a beauty supply store about ten years ago and have used it since...it ongle costs $1.99 or a likkle more ....am going to have to split the answer into different posts as this board is crazy...

his hair is similar to mine so while it is locking initially, juss the scalp an sparingly....once the locks r in, u can ,again, sparingly put some on the locks...as they grow longer and r stronger, u can up the amount..although, really, u never have to put allll that much 'grease' on hair...i have found that diet has a profound impact on hair..i.e. the types of food u eat...

i never condition my locks in the sense that u mean...i find that the application of olive oil, with a towel wrapped over the locks is conditioning enough....the heat generated by the wrapping the hair, opens up the hair shafts in the same way sticking ur head under a hairdryer...that type of heat is tooo much for locks IMO plus Ras not suppose fi use hairdryer [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img] u can tell i am ole school [img]/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img]

that double twisting is an idea given the texture hair u r working with...i didn't think of it as we grew up twisting hair one way to do chineybump after washing our hair ... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif[/img] it could be great really as with the texture it will take a little longer for the locks to hold..which is why u dont want to wash until they do...hence the witch hazel etc....once they locks hold, u can wash as u usually would...it is the product u use that will enhance or 'mess' up the locks...dont use detangling with that texture...truss me on that [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img]

for a toddler, wen he is tired an finally asleep, that is the best time to twist new growth and generally groom the locks... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img] for me,even to this day, i go to the movies after washing mine so i know i have to sit for at least an hour an a half ...ongle then will i sit still to twist my new growth... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img]

i juss try to use products that r low or hold no alcohol...as i explained, alcohol is a drying agent so it dries both hair an scalp...petroleum is heavy and clumps so i stay away from that...

also, u may want to use a COTTON tam to protect his hair wen he is sleeping or playing in dirt etc...i only wear cotton over my locks...it will allow the hair to breathe unlike synthetic fabrics which heat up an contain any sweat ....i also use castor oil, camfrey, lanoline oil on my hair....i visit health food stores an buy the unperfumed oils or wen i am home in Jamaica, i store up on the Camfrey oil mixture...it is sold in drug stores in a plain jar wid a vivid orange label...it is made in Jamaica an i think sometimes i am the ongle person who search out the shelves for it.... [img]/forums/images/graemlins/blush.gif[/img] it is fabulous...they mix olive, castor, coconut, camfrey etc for a lovely product....

reread this am an see i didnt ansa ur clip or band question...i say no ..one i am old school an two, undue tension on the hair plus whereeva u put di tension on , i.e. wid di rubber band, it is going to be prone to breakage as the locks grow...that spot will forever be weakened ...that is why u see plump locs wid the start part thinner were the rubber band sat for months etc
