Does anyone here Crochet or Knit?

I'm home on disability and have rediscovered a "like" for crochet. What creative hobby to have. I know how to knit but I've found at the moment I have no patience for the endless cast-ons. Crochet = 1 hook and your hands. That's suits me very much right now.

So am I alone with this timeless hobby? Has anyone made anything recently?
Does anyone C/K for charity? their family? their dog?

How do you make things that don't look obviously "handmade" (in the negative sense of the term)?

a few of us in here do both. mi better at crochet than knit. evanovitch will knit up a storm and vegas just a try a ting

@ Star ....HA! .....that's easy!.......don't follow the pattern. only use it as guideline and set your creativity free. What you end up with is usually better and more suited to you so it loses that look of homemade crochet because it suits you so well. I have yet to follow a pattern stright through as is to the very end. That's why I love crochet it's much easier to manipulate and change up as you go along whenever you feel like it.

follow the pattern. patterns can be hard to read (at least for me) so get a book with visual diagrams of the stitches. they'll usually tell you how may stiches, rows etc. remember the last stitch of a straight piece will automatically drop off and you have to make sure to pick it up so your piece is even.

Could we get two more different opionions?? lol! That's the fun of it all I guess, we may take different routes but as long as we're happy with the results it's a success! Maybe I should add that for an inexperienced crocheter, Sue is absolutely correct. however I still think that half the fun of it all is exploring your own creativity in the process.

Sue! You're chart for this filet crochet project looks very challenging! hHow is it coming along? I just can't imagine myself doing filet.. I remember a lady from church used to make those starched lacey ruffled centerpiece doylies. I hardly ever see those anymore.

OMG! how long will it take you to make this one you're showing? I've never done filet because I can't imagine being patient enough to complete it. I'd just keep putting it down for months at a time..

Lora - I've made a house full of doilets in the past for other people. personally i hate doilies, don't have a single one. but that was just to show you an example of using the visual pattern rather than the printed one. they're extremely easy to read.

Yes that was always the case. The person who was crocheting them was always doing it for somebody else. and I always got the feeling that they had any in their own home. My friend who gave me my first knitting needle in years right after I got out of hosp. absolutely refuses to even consider much less look at a crochet hook. She told me that a long time ago she did so many of those doilies - when they were the rage, she got permanently sick of it. the tiny needles, small stitches that took forever and intricate charts. I on the other hand am the reverse. Back in the day I knitted but recently discovered that &quot;regular&quot; non-filet crochet works up so much faster, one hook is so much more convenient and of course the instant gratification of a quickly completed new hat, purse, slippers, just cannot be beat! I LOVE IT!!! actually my dearest friend (God love her) saved my sanity when she dropped those two needles into my lap right out of the blue.

I mix knitting and crochet thesee days to make one of a kind, make them up as i go sweaters. the hook is a long one with a hook at the end and you can drop your knitting stitches onto the hook to change from knit to croche and vise versa.
