(sorry could not find the runners' thread)
Bighorn Trail Marathon (100mls, 50m 50K & 30K) in the *beautiful*, rough, rugged, high elevation area in Wyoming. My race 50K/31Miles started promptly at 8am the Saturday morning. It was cold and I wish I had my running gloves but I was wearing arm warmers, shin guard, knee slipons, and a good pair of well worn trail running shoes.
I was nervous as heck! The longest I had ran during my training was 18 miles but I have it in me to run 31 miles. Ultra marathons are a bit different from a typical marathon.... the terrains are often times impossible to run and walking is the better thing to do.
Bighorn National Forest, roughly 65 mls east of Yellowstone National Park is beautiful. We ran through the forest, ran through at least 12 creeks, which were ankle deep. Ran through marshy boggy areas.. my foot slipped out of my shoe going through these mucky areas. Walked up steep hills which were 1/4 mls long. Close to passing out at one point. Ran through swaths of snow and ice. Ran through beautiful meadows. Ran for miles on narrow extremely rock cow trails. Ran through the canyons on a ledge which was probably 2 ft drop from the steep gorge and the raging Bighorn River below. By the time I did 13 miles I was beat. By the time we had 12 more miles to go, the killer hill was ahead. After which 5 miles of steep down hill on a narrow rocky cow trail. I felt like I was working hard to suck in oxygen and by the end of the race my throat was so sore.
The race was close to being murderous (lol!)... twice I felt like I was going to pass out... many times I felt like quitting but I was stuck in a no-mans land and nothing to do but run it through. I have learned that doing these ultra races fueling the body is extremely important. This is the first race I spent up to 12 mins at an aid station re-fueling and resting my worn body. Honestly, this was a very tough race.
I finished in 8 1/2 hrs... I went over my goal by 1/2 hr. Definitely planning to do this race again next year.
