Heard this the other day about my daughter..

She has long thick hair that I manage by washing twice a week and combing it daily by spritzing water to get it wet, combing in and then adding gel to calm the frizzhalo.

The person telling me that asked if it is not troublesome to comb her hair? To me no. I tell her every day she has perfect hair and we work all kinds of ponytails (cause dat is what she likes into it).

The point is what message are you sending black girls when you are altering their natural state.

As a child I remember seeing women with long thick natural hair in a twist style or bun. What is wrong with that?

I think the person was asking it as creme-ing the hair would make it easier to handle. Not in the sense that it would relate to or harm your daughter's sense of self.

From your diagram, my hair would've been a 4b though it was a lot lot longer. I used to beg my mother to creme my hair, to iron it, anything to prevent me having to submit to the once a week ritual of sitting between her knees and getting the well vaselined wet hair combed...

People used to ask her the same thing...

She wanted to do it. My dad said over his dead body...

Years later, I wish I had listened to my dad... So good on you for not doing it... hope little kia never goes the perming route either...

If she wants to wear it out and curly, we wash, add Cantu leave in conditioner (thanks blackstar) comb out on and then dont touch it.. Curls perfectly. It is best to detangle her hair when wet and it does tangle!

If she wants to wear it straight, I condition it, part it in pieces add the blow dry stuff and use a roller brush and blow it dry.. comes out dead straight.. It takes a good hour but it does last.. and how does she style it after that.. She puts it in a ponytail

With all the options available to young black women today, I dont think she will go the creamy crack route.. I she doesnt

what's the balance? i think u have it kia. teach har dat har hair is beautiful and she nuh haffi have di proscribed standard of what is considered beautiful hair. beauty comes in a variety of shapes and forms. then low har to decide when she "of age" what she want to do wid it.

mi used to creme fimmi too but had no business. mine must be 4f with 4g inna di back. hard fi grow and mi neva know how fi take care a creme hair much less fi a dweet miself pon tap a dat. glad when mi get mi liberation and keeping up wid di joneses never matter to mi nuh mo'.

Maybe the woman just see straight hair as being easily managed.

The hair chart is helpful. According to it, I'm a 4e or 4f. I'm still trying to find the right product for my hair...namely moisturizer. I use a leave-in conditioner, which is nice but after 2 days my hair feels heavy, like a build up and it becomes hard to comb through. I can't tell how much I hate the every day combing combing, twisting twisting, plaiting plaiting plaiting... Every night mi cuss that I'm going to chop off my hair and go back to being a bald head soldier.

After she retired, this black American woman I know used to take trips to various countries with her sorority sisters. They enjoyed Fiji (or was it Samoa?) but wondered why the women they saw there did not process their unruly hair

Did she ask you how you managed girl Kia's hair before she got to that question? People hair along with what is a married woman waiting on to have a baby are 2 of the things you leave alone unless the person invite you to discuss their choice. I agree with Gen answer for her.
