Tight braids can lead to bald patch

Popular modern hairstyles that tightly braid the hair at the scalp can lead to permanent bald patches, say experts, BBC News Online reports.

Corn rows and other styles, such as extensions, which pull the hair are to blame, particularly if combined with hair straightening chemicals.

The research, published in the British Journal Of Dermatology, looked at almost 2,000 adults and children. A U.K. dermatologist said affected hair follicles may never recover.

there's a lot of truth. i've watched one woman in my building move from braids to a full wig because di hole a har head peel out. [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek2.gif[/img] eventually the follicles weaken CEW and di hair just doesn't grow back.

now if i could just add some braids to a couple stubborn chin hairs [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70402-thinking.gif[/img]

Generally speaking, I love seeing some styles of braids on women, but if it provokes balding, then one should take great care with that styling.

coolbeans: I've heard of breaking, but not of bald patches. Good to know though.

Yeah, that looks bad. Despite the cons of the styling, it is most convenient for some people, especially those with very busy lives and those who may be on limited budgets. Once the braids are in, they could last a couple of months, or several in some cases, with little maintenance; at least, so I've heard. I've always been curious though as to why they have to be done so tightly. Seems the first couple of days are usually hellish.

this white residue forms around the natural hair and that stuff stinks because it's mixed with sweat that hasn't been properly washed out because of the braids. the hair also binds together.

ewww I had a roomie whose hair/braids used to smell like damp rag after a while...

She'd take great offence when I tried to tell her, claiming that she washed it often (which was true) - but it didn't stop it stinking...

Interesting. So, braided hair cannot be washed properly or is that dependent on the person/hair type? As you can tell, I know nothing about the subject, but am willing to learn since I like the style.
