I can't comment on that. I do know that what they put on my hair when I was in high school would burn like crazy right away as soon as they put it on and before too long, the hair would break off. The relaxer today, doesn't burn.

I was talking about my personal experience when they put the chemicals in the hair. In high school, whatever they were puttting on (they used to call it "cold straightening") Would burn like crazy right away? What is put on my hair now doesn't. I then went on to say.

Now if someone was stupid enough to leave it on for along time, who knows?

Very few White people are trained to relax Black hair without damaging it.

Just because it is called Creme of Nature does not mean it is the same product..... cold straightening...that people used to use way back. That is myh only point. Come come now from a branding POV "relax of nature"...how appealing does that sound?

Why is it so successful? Will have to quote a hairdresser on that..it is beyond my scope of expertise.

Okay, this is what my hairdresser says about sodium hydroxide.

I have tried a number of different relaxers and formulas, including the "so called" "natural relaxers". Over the years I have yet to find one with the reliability and performance characteristics of a good sodium hydroxide based formula. These sodium hydroxide based relaxers will almost without exception leave Afro textured hair in better over all condition, when used by a skilled and knowledgeable stylist than any other type of relaxer available on the market I have so far encountered, period. An additional advantage of using sodium hydroxide as our active ingredient is this makes our Wash & Wear relaxer system compatible with many other relaxers on the market, a benefit for those wishing to safely convert from a traditional relaxer to our Wash & Wear system

There are a number of web sites and companies out there offering so called "natural" relaxers, but once a product is applied to the hair and is able to break chemical bonds to cause a permanent change in the curl pattern of the hair, it most definetly has to contain an active chemical to do this. There are no two ways around this fact. If any company will not tell you specifically and clearly, as we do, what their active ingredient is, even if they claim it is derived from "natural sources" the active ingredient will have a specific chemical name, and start to talk about "trade secrets" or "a proprietary formula" I would be extremely wary. We consider our formula to be proprietary, what all the exact ingredients and the amounts added in our relaxer are, but we have no problem at all about being quite specific what our active ingredient is. According to my brother who has a PhD in chemistry there is only one truly natural relaxer and it is heat, as when we do a press and curl, anything else you are using is a chemical (even water used in wet-setting is a chemical, H2O). To make an informed decision myself as a hair stylist, I personally want to know specifically and exactly what it is I am applying to my clients hair, and just as important I want my clients to know as well.


Nothing makes me happier than when people are skeptical and question our products and what we do. I like people to know what we do is much more about technique and following a system than just a product. At Jazma we have been doing Wash & Wear relaxers for more than 22 years and been teaching our methods at beauty industry trade shows for the past 12 years. We have developed a system and products for achieving consistent great results in what we call Wash & Wear relaxers for Black hair. Most stylists can do shorter hair texturizers and achieve good results their clients are happy with. However, once the hair starts to get longer there are a number of problems that start to present themselves.

RichD is asking about the difference between relaxing hair, creaming hair and pressing hair (bun head).

RichD pressing hair was done with a hot comb. It is temporary using a comb that was heated up over the stove.




It would smell like the hair was burning. I guess that is the origin of the expression "she bun up ar hair."



It was a temporary process. As soon as the hair gets wet, it resumes it's natural texture. The ends might be straight though. I found that when I went natural. The ends had to be cut off.

Well much as I hate to ever admit I am wrong especially to you Emperah but I discussed this whole matter with my hairdresser during my appointment today. She said you are basically right. Sodium chloroide was used in the old cold straightening but in today's relaxers, the concentration is much lower and the additives are different. That is the reason it used to burn like crazy. Also, hairdressers used to put the concentration on the hair and scalp (some Jamaican hairdressers still do she said). Their technique is to put the hair relaxer on the hair but not touch the scalp.

With respect to the issue of burning, she said that if the relaxer is left on too long, it would burn.

She also said the chemical used for the old cold wave and jehri curls was different. I'll get it and type it when I have time.

With respect to the issues of creaming vs relaxing hair she said some old time Jamaicans still refer to it as creaming.

I HATE that. It is most infuriating and frustrating.

I wasn't planning on getting this deep into the argument dealing with chemistry and all dat but you head so thick you were so stubborn and insistent as usual.

I got into a with another guy about hair dye a while back and it was the same story. When I checked with the hairdresser the guy was right. :bexbad.

My hairdresser said in future I should check my facts with her before getting into wid men bout hair.

Anyway, the other chemical is Ammonium thioglycolate which was used for cold waves and Jheri curls.
One thing you got to admit, when we get into one of our many warsI do my homework and at least when I am wrong...which isn't often I say I am wrong.
