FDA sued over records relating to harmful chemical in Colgate toothpaste
The Natural Resources Defense Council is suing the FDA to obtain records about the possible health hazards of controversial chemical triclosan, which was used in Colgate Total, a brand of toothpaste that was approved by the agency in 1997.
They’re getting the brush-off.
The Natural Resources Defense Council is suing the Food and Drug Administration to get public records related to the possible health hazards of toothpaste.
The Manhattan-based environmental group says it requested records this past Dec. 24 about the FDA’s 1997 approval of Colgate Total, which includes the controversial chemical triclosan.
But the FDA hasn’t provided a complete version of the records and has violated the Freedom of Information Act, according to the NRDC lawsuit filed Wednesday in Manhattan Federal Court.
“Scientific studies have linked triclosan to multiple health hazards,” including disrupting hormones that regulate brain and reproductive functions, says the complaint.
The NRDC says it wants to see the Colgate application the FDA used to approve the product. The FDA gave the group a redacted version of the records in January, according to the lawsuit.
Triclosan is found in many products, from dish soap to hand sanitizer.
