and u just reinforce wah mi always say nbout natral hair- it require almost the same time and attention as cream hair. wen mi did braid mi hair di time, i really like the feel of my natral roots too. Frequent relaxers don't hinder growth (I was inexact above) so much as they keep you from retaining length at the ends. Overuse does lead to breakage. We've all seen those ladies with the back of their clothes full of short, broken-off pieces of hair.

Hear why:

Extending the time between chemical straightening could be healthier for hair and enable one to better retain length. Going a longer time between relaxing services is often referred to as “stretching”.

Stretching chemical processes reduces the number of lines of demarcation between previously relaxed hair and touch-ups; lines of demarcation are the weaker areas of hair that are the most prone to breakage.

This is hair relaxed every 6 weeks:

This is hair relaxed every 12 weeks:

Each dot (.) represents the line of demarcation between each touch up. For two different heads of hair of equal length, the one that is relaxed more often will have more lines of demarcation and hence more weak points than the one that is relaxed less frequently.

When the relaxer is not applied as carefully as it should be, there might even be overlap with strands that might look like this:

In this example, these dots ( represent areas of overlap, where in addition to applying the relaxer to the new growth, some has gotten on the previously relaxed hair. IMO, the shorter your hair is, probably the more frequently you have to get touch ups. If you hair is short like Halle Berry's used to be, just a few weeks after a touch up, half of your hair would be natural and the other half relaxed. Some people find this unmanageable. If your hair is medium to long, a few weeks of new growth doesn't make that much difference in proportion to the rest of your relaxed hair.

I think getting touch ups as frequently as every three weeks is a lot. Still if your hair is not damaged and gaining length is not an objective for you, then there is no reason to change your habits.

ex-creme my foot back. u have big hair, but mi sure it nuh ahm thick, wat a want to say hmmm. it have a diff texture, so it can manage not being relaxed and wont crimp up as much as mine would. how dat sound?

mi nuh too sure bout the length of hair dictating touch up time. mi still think is the texture of said hair- how thick the roots get. but bring on that theory!

I agree, Donnika and would even say every 6-8 weeks. And it's surprising to find that plenty people don't use deep conditioner whenever they wash their hair.

then di multiple dot dot dem lost me. except dat the dimurcation part would be wider, so even more susceptible to breakerage? a suh? i always thought the breakage was split end and dryness.

It's true that Florida humidity makes hair frizzy up quick (is Florida you live, right?) When I lived in Ft. Lauderdale, I used to get touch ups every 4 months. When I moved to France, I got my hair done more and more infrequently. As soon as I step off the plane at Miami, my roots feel like any carpet though.

Yeah, it's my theory.

In any case, relaxers work by breaking down the protein bonds in curly hair. Once broken, those bonds can never ever be re-formed. So when relaxer is applied again (and sometimes again and again and again) to previously relaxed hair, the remaining protein bonds are broken and/or weakened. The resulting lack of protein is what causes the hair to become dry and prone to split ends, and then it breaks.

Overprocessing isn't the only cause of split ends and breakage. Poor diet, i.e. iron or B-vitamin deficiency can cause strands to become very fine and weak (I went through that a few years back). Also, using harsh shampoos, not deep conditioning regularly, too much heat, etc. can also contribute to breakage.

When damage is caused by using the wrong products or incorrect techniques, that's relatively easy to fix. Overprocessed or mineral-deficient hair has to grow out for it to get back on track.

True, we did chat about this before, but I was actually referring to my bout of anemia a few years ago. It took about two years for my hair to fully recover. I also had to change stylist. The first one had trainees who *always* overprocessed my hair. Fortunately I only used to go 2x a year.

Anyways, mi relax my hair every 10-12 weeks. I have found that is the creme mi use dat mek it last longer fi some reason [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/70402-thinking.gif[/img] If mi use a soft n beautiful weh mi can buy out the box from anyweh den it hafi relax by week8...an when mi use mi hair dresser own (Design, Affirm, Dudley's, etc) it can last fi bout 3 months [img]/forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/bannana_purple.gif[/img]

I do it every 8 - 10 weeks and my split end problems ended when I put down the curling iron! I wash my hair once a week blow dry and then flat iron it and no more heat goes on it for the rest of the week.
