SandiF, I don't have a rock garden, but heathers and alpines (there are lots of varieties)thrive in rockeries. Don't call me when you imprt the rocks as mi back is alrady hurting!
Now that the fall has started, I have begun harvesting seeds from other peoples' gardens , my mums are also going to be blooming soon too for a really great show in late fall. My giant sunflowers draw little birds to feast, because the seeds are riping and it's such a great feeling when I go home in the evening and a whole swarm of those little birds rise up from feeding.

Thanks for keeping this thread going, it's been difficult for me here in NY to even think much about gardening, however I still do.
I have reaped some good tomatoes and collard greens, yesterday I made chicken soup with them (and other ingredients, of course) and felt good that I could use some fresh veggies from my garden. I admit I haven't been paying much attention to my garden lately, the air stinks outside and I wondered how much of the ashes settled on my crop. I must have washed the greens and tomatoes about 20 times before using them. I have the hope that there will be a next season for me to start gardening again.
I'm stll getting lots of thyme, it's really nice to be able to just cut some and not worry about running out.
I took a long look at the flowers yesterday, we still have roses blooming, pretty delicate pink ones and some big red ones that seem to come out of nowhere, I thought they were finished but they keep blooming. The marigolds as I said, are still doing their thing, and I'm sure I'll have plenty next year with out having to plant them again. I threw seeds in other parts of the yard hoping they take set for next year.
SandiF, still no books from Sangster's, I've given up. How about you? I did email them and asked them what the point was of having an online store and they don't fill the orders...still no reply. I was so looking forward to those books.......

Ok P48,mountiangal,(de Canadians,seen mi inna compitition DWL) but all of you,it time now to plant all your fratlent(sp) DWL vegs. like onion,garlic,brussel sprout,radishes,all those then by spring,they will be up an you can have a good long crop.
Arite,Simmy now you bring up a point, re the ashes,a wonder if it will affect the crops,when i was a child weh us to throw the ashes at the yam an pumpkin root also de tomato roots,i guess we have to wait an see aaah sah,we all get effected by this one way or the other.anyway till next time.

Hi Fellow Gardenists -- bring this back to the top
Guess it's time to put the gardens to bed -- the tree leaves are falling, the summer crops have ended (except for a few tomatoes, onions, thyme) -- also a few squash left in the garden.
Overall it wasn't a bad summer for veggies but the early heat and dry spell really made a difference this year.
Next year gonna be different as after much thought we decide to move a bit closer to hubby's work and daughter's univ.
Simmy, SandiF, Bigtime -- have your gardens gone to bed yet??

Just a quick question, mi madda seh fi ask yuh (cause mi tell har mi know one expert pon di gardening She bought some tomato seeds back with her from Us, di Big Bwoy Tomato seeds, she planted them this year, they took long to come up but finally did and big too however most of them seems to have spoilt, she was thinking whether it was the cold/frost but we haven't had any frost as yet, then she was wondering whether all the water settling on them spoilt them..she just doesn't know, any ideas? oh! incidentally it seems to have only happend to the big bwoy tomatoes as my aunt's small tomatoes came out good.
Also she wanted to know if there is any other thing she can use instead of insecticide as she would rather stay away from the chemical, but don't want the snails/slugs gettin fat pon har garden

English ting, good question bout the big boy tomatoes, my own did the same thing->>except for the ones I picked that weren't quite ripe. These I let finish ripening after I picked them and they were quite good. My take on these is that you can't let them completely ripen on the vine, why, I don't know. I'm thinking too, that these have to be planted earlier than the other tomatoes, maybe even started indoors. Let's see what our other gadenists have to say about it.
As far as insecticides go, I don't use any but there were quite a few suggestions in the gardening thread, it's here, called *Summer Gardens Pt. 2* (I'll post the link below) Part 1 went to delete heaven.
Bigtime lives on England, he said he used beer (of all tings, dwl) We'll have to ask him again how to use it. I'm going to repost your question in the gardening thread and someone is sure to reply to answer your questions with their suggestions.

I also heard about the beer ting, it apparently attracts the slugs, I also heard that "soapy water" also works, anyone else hear that?
Hello Folks. Don't know bout expertise but here goes:you need a plastic container with a lid, fill container about half way, cover container, cut two slots on opposite sides of the container level with the top of the beer (slots should be large enough for the slugs/snails to enter)submerge container in earth level with the slots near plants you wish to protect. After a week remove container, empty (preferably in compost) repeat procedure until end of season. I know that we can by "slug traps" that use beer in DIY stores here. Another tip worth try ing is sprinkle pepper in the garden will illiminate visits of cats, dogs, squirills,foxes and other vermin.
A bit windy today so I have limited my gardening to removing dead plants. Still lots of flowers in bloom.
Got to go as I am the chef today!

The beer is just set out in jar caps and left aound the garden. Theu slugs are attracted to the stuff and slither in, only to drown in it, LOL!
About the tomatoes:
Sounds to me as though they were victims of a fungus known as Tomato Blight, which is very very common. It makes the branches and leaves gradually turn yellow and then brown and wilt. I hope you didn't put the plants in your compost heap! They should be disposed of in the garbage, and try planting them in a different place next year.
Our tomatoes (we had about 6 different 'heritage' varieties) were good this year, but the only peppers that did well were the hot ones. Maybe we need a bit more sun in the yard.
The collards are especially good after they have had a couple of good frosts. I have seen syrup running out of the cut stems of collards that is just as thick as corn syrup after a good freeze. And they keep beautifully if you freeze them for winter too. What a great vegetable! Yummmmmm!!!!

Thanx Ms Peaches I will pass your info onto my mom...I think I have been inspired to do more with my garden, I have a big garden but don't do enough with it, my parents and sister always plant tomatoes, scallion, beans, thyme etc., but I've been very lazy...but no more next year mi planting and only this morning I went to my sisters (just down di road) and she give mi a bag full of tomatoes and onions....yes mi definately gonna plant something next year
