Newton receives Youth Musgrave Award

I've been waiting to announce this important news about Newton!


<span style="font-size: 11pt">&quot;Newton Marshall has been awarded the Youth Musgrave Award, introduced in 2001, for his courage and persistence in completing the Idiatrod race. There would have been 13 awardees, but graphic artist Franklin Bernard declined the Bronze Musgrave. </span>

Very few persons heavily involved in popular music have received Musgrave Awards, among them singer Ernie Smith (Bronze, 2002), Clement 'Sir Coxson' Dodd (Gold, 2002), Lloyd Parkes (2002, Bronze) and broadcaster Dermot Hussey (Bronze).

Former Third World Band member Michael 'Ibo' Cooper, who lectures at the Edna Manley College of the Visual and Performing Arts, was awarded a Silver in 2007 for Music and Arts Management. &quot;

It is worth a read, it tells a lot about not only Lance, but imagine this is the influence which is beingconveyed to Newton. Our guy couldn't possibly be in better hands...

LANCE MACKEY MAY be the toughest athlete on the planet. And while he's not one to brag, he will tell you a few stories. Like about the time in 2001, when he was 30 and racing the Iditarod for the first time. It was the goal of his new life, after he'd kicked the drugs and cut back on the booze. The race was in its final days, and even though he wasn't anywhere near the leaders, he was certain to finish, which meant he'd receive the belt buckle that all rookie Iditarod mushers get when they reach Front Street in Nome.

Dan Winters for ESPN The Magazine Cancer has taken a lot from Lance, including his left index finger, but he finds strength in his favorite dog, Zorro, a survivor just like his owner.

He'd spent the entire race with what he thought was a bad toothache. The pain was so bad, in fact, that it forced him to pull his 16 dogs to a stop and cry in the middle of the Alaskan wilderness. At a checkpoint early in the race, he had bitten into a pork chop and felt a crackle and pop. The tooth fell out. Problem solved, right? He kept mushing.

Turns out, problem not solved. Turns out he'd soon learn he had throat cancer. Turns out he was being taught the most difficult lesson for any athlete to accept: When he needs his body the most, it will fail him. Except Mackey refuses to learn. Years later, sitting in a roadside restaurant outside of Fairbanks, he's thin as a spine and missing more than just that one tooth. He's lost a finger. He's down to one good arm. The skin on half his face is scarred and stretched to the limit. He can't produce an ounce of spit. Thanks to racing in subzero temperatures for days on end, his ears, toes and remaining fingers are permanently frostbitten. His back is tender, his right hip clicks, his right leg cramps. He struggles to get out of bed every morning, much less climb onto his dogsled and mush 1,000 miles in the Alaskan wilderness.

And yet next March, Mackey could become the first man to win five straight Iditarods.

No kidding! One tough motor scooter Lance is!

I just happened to run across this pic on facebook, of Lance chasing off a moose with a tree limb to protect his dog team.

Not too many people will try to run down a moose! They do cause trouble on the trail. One moose got badly tangled in Susan Butcher's team a bunch of year back, it was a real disaster..

This is not a game for sissies!





A snippet from Susan's story:


In 1985, I was traveling alone at night in the lead of the race and ran into an obviously crazed moose. She was starving to death. There was something wrong with her. She was just skin and bones. And rather than run away, she turned to charge the team. I thought she would just run through me. I stopped the team, threw the sled over. She had plenty of room to pass us along the trail. She came into the team and stopped. She just started stomping and kicking the dogs. She charged at me. for twenty minutes, I held her off with my ax and with my parka, waving it in her face. And finally, another musher came along and we shot her, but not before she had killed two of my dogs, and she injured thirteen others, leaving me to scratch from the race. She bruised my shoulder. We spent the next two weeks at a veterinary hospital, saving the lives of the injured dogs.&quot;

<span style="font-size: 11pt">Newton Marshall Honoured With Youth Musgrave Medal</span>

Jamaica Dogsled Team musher Newton Marshall will receive the Youth Musgrave Medal on October 13, 2010 in honour of his courage and persistence in completing the 2010 Iditarod.

The Youth Musgrave was introduced in 2001 and Marshall becomes the 11th person to be presented with the medal. The medal will be awarded October 13 at the Institute of Jamaica.

&quot;It is a real honour to receive such an amazing award,&quot; said Marshall. &quot;I have been blessed to be surrounded by people who have helped me succeed and this medal was made possible by their help and support.&quot;

The Musgrave Medals are awarded to selected persons for achievements in the fields of literature, art and science. The awarding of Musgrave Medal dates back to the 1800s, as a memorial to Sir Anthony Musgrave, former Governor of Jamaica who founded the Institute of Jamaica. Since 1889, medals have been awarded annually in his honour. There will be a total of 12 recipients of Musgrave Medals this year.

&quot;The Musgrave Medal is truly a prestigious award,&quot; said Danny Melville, Founder and Manager of the JDT. &quot;We feel it is a privilege to see one of our mushers selected as a recipient of the Youth Musgrave Medal. We want to express our sincere thanks to the Institute of Jamaica for seeing the same courage and bravery in Newton that we have seen throughout his life.&quot;

Marshall will not be able to attend the event and accept the award in person as he is currently in Alaska training for the upcoming racing season, which will include the International Pedigree Stage Stop Sled Dog Race in Wyoming and the 2011 Iditarod. Marshall is one of three mushers who will be racing for the team this winter. Damion Robb and newcomer, Jermain Burford will be taking part in sprint races in Ontario and the US.

This fall will also see the release of a <span style="font-weight: bold">new book by John Firth, titled &quot;One Mush</span>&quot; as well as a new documentary following Marshall during his completion of the 2010 Iditarod, titled &quot;<span style="font-weight: bold">Cool Mushing&quot;.</span>

JDT sponsors include: Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville, Chukka Caribbean Adventures, WestJet Vacations, Alpine Aviation, Northern Lights Optometry, Cottey College, Annamaet Petfoods and the Jamaica Tourist Board.
