A girlfriend and I were talking the other day about our Black consciousness days, when we were greedily reading books that opened our minds to different aspects of our identity, in such a way that we still felt their influences in our ives today.
For my friend, it was books by Ivan Van Sertima. For me, it was a number of books - by J.A. Rogers, in particular his three volume Sex and Race series. These books talk about mixing of the races throughout the ages, and looks in particular at the European royal houses.
Then there's the classic, Autobiography of Malcolm X - I cried at the end for the loss of such a man in such a way. And The Destruction of Black Civilization.
From another angle, a book that had a profound effect on my consciousness as a woman was The Female Eunuch, Germaine Greer at her most radical. Ain't I A Woman by bell hooks was also an eye-opener for me.
