But even in Jamaica the whole good housewife thing was embedded in the curiculum when i went to high school. I had to study:
- Grooming and Etiquette
- Textiles and clothing
- Food and Nutrition

All of are indeed gender specific and to be honest I enjoyed them but would have greatly appreciated some Shop classes and mechanical classes as well.

Anyway...back on topic.
Let's say some of us are not happy with the concept of a 'hope chest', let's just look at the word 'hope'. Is there a great deal of hope around? for our boys? and for our girls?


How do we define hope?

We define hope as wanting better times ahead. Hope speaks to human progress, to dreams we share, to improving current conditions with a focus on the future. Hope does not dwell on the past. Heroes and Hope encourages people to become heroes and - in exchange - bring hope to their communities.

Desire - the feeling that what is desired is also possible

Optimism - the feeling that events may turn out for the best

Expectation - a desire of good with expectation of obtaining it

My hope chest was in my heart. I was too poor to afford something actual. Anything my mother had that could be passed down my older siblings had. And while I lived at home, I had to contribute to supporting the household, which left me with little to fill any physical chest.

Still, my mother is an excellent seamstress, knitter and chrocheter and she tried to teach these things to all her kids...

While my two older brothers aren't 'offically' tailors by trade, they do this work on the side and are excellent at it. Me, I can't crochet and I can't knit, but I can sew, even though I hate it. When I am unable to find anything in the stores that suits my taste, I make what I desire and I bless my Mom for having taught me how.

My parents made sure all the kids had hope chests in their hearts. We had a hope for a better life - we knew how to dream and we dreamed a lot. Some of us now work from the contents of our chests and it makes us happier and more fulfilled, while others of us have discarded the chest along the way, cause it wasn't tangible.

So I help to build my son's hope chest in his heart. He knows he can do whatever, be whatever, have whatever, if he hopes enough, want it enough work hard enough and deserve it enough. And though I have never attempted to teach him how to sew, I have worked with him on sketching and painting and writing and cooking. And I can only hope that all this will serve him well later on...

I sew also and used to make a new dress for work every day
until mi get to feeling sey store clothes look a little better...but...for the time I made my own garb, I felt really good about sharing in a skill that so many others had. We used to have sewing parties.

My girlfriend in Ja. still makes outfits for her family: male and female...and she does not have to dweet...just sheer love of her hobby...and at this age...therapeutic. [img]/forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif[/img]
